Mainframe Welcomes Gen Z

As the #1 Integrated Software Vendor (ISV) for mainframe, Broadcom continues to invest substantially. Broadcom’s investment spans software, hardware and building the next generation of technical leaders.

You are likely already aware that we run the Vitality Program where we hire and train new talent, and deploy the team members at customer sites. We offer an all access pass to online education for Broadcom Mainframe customers and instructor led training to make it easy to grow skills.

We also engage with universities to consult and teach (e.g. Tennessee State University) on their curriculum. We proudly educate students on the importance of mainframes to the world economy, as well as share how the platform and the software continue to modernize. We provide career guidance, hold resume workshops, share knowledge via guest lectures and provide growth opportunities for the students. Students are drawn to the mainframe when they learn that:

  • The mainframe processes over 1 trillion web transactions per day

  • 67 of 100 fortune 100 companies rely on the mainframe

  • The mainframe continues to reimagine the IT landscape evolving to meet the needs of the economy

In addition to the power and importance of the mainframe, students are overwhelmed by the strong sense of community, purpose and belonging.

Students are encouraged to apply to be part of Broadcom’s internal vitality program (internship). Let me be upfront and set expectations; there is extremely tough competition for these opportunities with hundreds and hundreds of students eagerly applying.

Minimum requirements include:

  • 3.5 GPA

  • Pursuing a technical degree

  • Junior or senior planning to continue to graduate school

  • Score well relative to other applicants on a skills assessment

  • Interview

Expectations from the start are similarly high. Internal vitality residents are placed on an agile scrum team and assigned a buddy. Onboarding is rapid, and participants are given “real” work to do. Our experience is immersion into our “in office” culture and continuously operating with a growth mindset leads to outstanding results. Let me share a few of the deliverables from last year’s program…

  • Developing a prediction model for performance metrics

  • Developing product health check(s) for customers to run and receive an assessment with specific recommendations

  • Creating and automating function test cases

  • Delivering a new UI pattern to be used by product teams

As you can see, there is business value both for Broadcom and Broadcom customers as a result of these deliverables. In addition, the Broadcom development team benefits from the energy and knowledge the internal vitality residents bring with them every day.

In the coming days some of this year’s internal vitality residents will share their mainframe experiences. I am very excited to see the results of their efforts. Stay tuned!
