In symantec only File out-protect scaning is there.  There is no auto scanning of Flash drive or removable drives which gets connected. But when we access any Folder or Files with in the Flash drive the location gets scanned.

It depends upon the Antivirus whether it is updated with latest defintions to detect and delete the known virus.

    Hi Dave,

AutoProtect will scan and protect any mounted file systems on computers running Symantec Antivirus. This does include USB flash drives. Symantec Antivirus does not currently run an automatic scan on the contents of flash drives when they are first plugged in. A manual scan on the contents of a flash drive can be initiated by right-clicking on the drive in My Computer and choosing Scan for Viruses...

Yes, Symantec can scan flash drives once it is opened. I haven't had any autorun.inf virus so I didn't test it out. But when checking the reports from various users in my network, Symantec does detect any malware found in the root directory of any removable storage inserted. If the virus is in a folder, it will be detected once the folder is opened. I guess Symantec decides to go this path for the convenience of users. Scanning a flash drive when it's used on the PC would slow down your access to the drive. And as all users want it fast, they'd probably cancel it anyway.
