    Greetings,

I've tried search and cannot find a definitive answer and the 'customer care' is hopeless :s

So we have Wise Package Studio V7 installed as a sharepoint on a server and clientside on my desktop.

Unfortunately the virtual SVS app seems to cause a massive RAM leak on my core2duo PC, rendering it useless. So I wish to try service pack 3, to see if it cures the issue.

My question is this. Can I install V7 SP3 without it affecting any of out existing projects on our V7 sharepoint?

    Thanks in advance.

Why not take the pragmatic approach? Build a couple of VMs, one for a copy of your d/b, hosted by SSEE (neé MSDE) and the other with the client, upgrade them both and test.

Thanks, obviously I would of taken this approach if I had access to VM or if we even used VM, but we don't :)

    Anyone else please?

    >if I had access to VM
How does anyone package with no virtual machines? Don't tell me you use normal Ghosted boxes? :)

Anyway, there's no excuse any longer. Download the MS equivalent, Virtual PC or the equally nice VirtualBox, both for free.

I get your point, but I don't really have the time or resources to be messing around with VM/VPC or others. Yes we use ghost :/ It only takes 20mins to restore an image though and install Wise on the client machine, so I 'm not too bothered :)

Surely someone knows whether you can simply upgrade an existing sharepoint to SP3?

just install the latest version of SVS on your client machine? The memory leak does not affect the server, therefore you can try the latest SVS version on your client. Then you can see if that solves the problem.

    Cheers
    Phil

    p.s.
Is the Server still unavailable for automatically downloading the actual SVS client when installing the WPS 7 SP3?
    Cheers
    Phil

maybe you don't have time as your not investing in the fastest processes.

    just a thought.

    >It only takes 20mins to restore an image though and install Wise on the client machine
LOL...20 MINUTES?!?!?! Come on, get real.

Install VPC - 10 minutes, tops. Install your image into a VPC - 20 minutes, plus another 5 to change computername.  Do another one as well: you can never have enough VMs/VPCs. That time won't be needed again, especially if you back the w/s to DVD/disk image (yes, Ghost *does* have its uses!)

So, one kicks off a VPC, log in. Run the MSI, test. All good, restore snapshot, ready for the next MSI to test. Time to restore a snapshot? Under ONE MINUTE. So, in the tnme it takes you to rebuild a box with Ghost, I've tested TWENTY MSIs. Are you paid by the hour? If you are, I can see the rationale :)

(I chose VPC but all the above applies to VirtualBox - also free - and VMWare - not free)

If you install SP3, the process will update your SQL database (you will need to run repository manager to complete this update).
You will then have to update ALL your clients from the SP3 server location - you cannot run mixed SP2 and SP3 clients.
This should not affect your existing projects.

However, which virtual SVS application are you referring to? The SVS client installed by the WPS7 SP3 release is much older than the SVS client you can download direct from Symantec. Or are you referring to the SVS editor in WPS ?

The Altiris KB contains release notes for each service pack release - you could of course look up the SP3 release notes and see if there is any mention of the issue you are experiencing - one that I've frankly not heard of before in the forums.

By the way, I do agree with both VBScab and John McFadyen as to the extreme usefulness of virtual machines. The fact that they can be set up once and then rolled back to a known configuration makes it easy peasy to perform simple experiments such as you are avoiding through a perception that it takes for ever to set up.

20 minutes for a ghost rebuild sounds very slow - are you running pentium 3 machines?

Thanks, exactly the answer I was looking for.

Yes the SVS applet I'm talking about is the virtual layer thing which you access the options for in control panel.

The RAM leak is definately caused by the Wise Package install though. Whether it's the app or the SVS addon I'm not sure, but I have seen a few posts on the net about there being ram leak issues. So as soon as it is installed on my core2duo rig the swapfile increases steadily in size over a 5 hour period until it's full and then it runs out of memory. If I uninstall it, then all is fine again.

However it works fine on another machine which is just a P4 dual core and not core2duo.

Er no 3.2ghz P4's. Surely it depends on the size of the image being restored as well? :s Our image is fairly large as it has some key business apps included.

Good idea. But where can I find this latest SVS version?

Maybe the company I'm working for does not have the budget to invest in VM technology right now due to the present financial climate?

Yes I know I can achieve the same thing with free versions. But unfortunately the red tape here does not allow me to do so. Yes I know it's ridiculous, but it's out of my hands.

You can get a bunch of SVS stuff from SVSDownloads.com
Symantec have renamed SVS as "Workspace Virtualisation", for which there is a separate forum. No doubt the regulars in there will be able to point you to any later editions on the Symantec website.

    >unfortunately the red tape here does not allow me to do so
So, you go to your TL and ask him if he'd prefer a one minute restore or a twenty minute one. Which answer is he likely to give? If it's twenty, go to the Finance Director. He'll set the idiot straight. Holy cow....

20min isn't that long Ian however; we get too used with VM :) I would choke if I would have to wait for 20min instead of <1min

Jesus VBScab you are one anal and persistant person aren't you. Do I have to explain the inner workings of the whole company to you or what? No I don't. However seeing as you want to make an argument out of everything I've posted in this thread, read below.

I'm contract at this place, it's not my decision or place to be telling these guys what they should be doing. I've been employed to do a specific job with the tools they have provided. Of course I have told them about VM and it's benefits, time savings, in fact I did this about 6 months ago. If they wish to ignore my advice then that's their call.

I have just ordered a copy of Wise Package Studio 7 SP3, on installing i am having problems creating the 3 backend DB's on a SQL (2008) server, as i go through the repository wizard i supple the SQL server name and select SQL Authentication with a valid account and password with SYSAdmin permissions (tried and tested), all seems good the Wise Share Point is Created at the specified location but the whole process fails with "A database processing error was encountered".

In the event viewer on the SQL server all the error message says is as below:
    Event Type: Failure Audit
    Event Source: MSSQLSERVER
    Event Category: Logon
    Event ID: 18456

Can anyone throw light on the problem, i have setup WPS many times and never encountered these problems, maybe i am just doing something wrong but i have tried everything to get this working. I could really do with some help!!!

WPS 7 SP3 has been around for a long time before the release of SQL 2008, so there is no guarantee of compatibility.
However, as a starting point, can I refer you to the Altiris Knowledgebase at http://kb.altiris.com, where you can search for a document that will give you setup instructions for SQL Express Server, from which you may get the configuration information you require for your current SQL setup.
