  • 1.  What is the best practices to create a deployment job to upgrade Windows 7 to 10?

    Posted Sep 27, 2019 08:13 AM

I am new to new to Deployment Solutions 8.5 in Altiris.  I am been tasked to use Altiris to upgrade 600 systems from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and capture their profile.  With the help of the elibrary course DS 8.1, I've update the SMP setting for Deployment OS Files, Keys, System Configuraton, Automation, and NBS general and global. Then pushed out DS pluging for the agents and DS Plugins for Site servers.  The Site server settings in SMP shows they are setup for NBS.

I then created a Migrate to Windows 10 Job with these tasks:

    Capture Personaltiy

Boot to PXE with MY PE Win 10

    Install Windows 10

    Boot Production

    Apply Configuration

    Distribute Personality

In the advance settings, time set to 400 minutes and not to go to sleep.

The issue is it fails at Boot to PXE with error -1001.  It goes into a continous loop then fails.  The DS log shows this:

How do I fix the PXE issue to get to the next task in the job?  Also is this job sequence an ideal way to perform an in place upgrade on a system?

Thank an advance for your help.

An update, I noticed under Setting\Deployment\Preboot Configurations, then status, the site server for the test system is not listed.  I checked under NBS General Settings for the server targets and the sie server is listed there.  Is there anywhere is I need to check or update to get the site server listed under the preboot configurations?

    Thanks,

    Hi velezm75,

Please check if "Symantec Network Boot Service (PXE and BSDP)" and "Symantec Network Boot Service (TFTP)" exist on your PXE Server.
If not please try to reinstall PXE Services using Settings -> Notification -> Site Server Settings -> Site Servers -> click on your Site Server -> Install/remove services and reinstall "Network Boot Service".

Take a look at this KB for Troubleshooting PXE related problems: https://support.symantec.com/us/en/article.howto93891.html
    (check PxeServiceStatus.log, SbsConfiguration.xml, Sbslog_Interface.txt.....)

    Network23

I checked to see if both services were installed and they were and started. Still does't show in Preboot configuration status window as one of the pxe server.  The PXE server is Windows 2016.  It's one of the 2 2016 servers that are not showing in the status widnows and have the NBS services runing.  Could it be that server OS 2016 is not compatible with 8.5 DS plugins?

When I run the job to Migrating Windows 10, it fails at Boot to PXE. That test system connects to the 2016 PXE Sever. The test system agent shows the PXE task error is -1001 and then fails.  Does not go to the next task Install Windows 10. I had attached the copy of the log.  Any other suggestions I can try to get the Boot to PXE completed successfully.

Also what DS jobs have been tested and are successfull to upgrade a managed system in Altiris from Win 7 to Win 10?
