Okay, here we are building new monitoring platform from scratch (Polaris). On day one we create support for MIBII. On day two we add support for say Cisco 7600 router, day three VMware vCenter, day four Juniper Firewall... How far should we go down this list before we totally get consumed by chasing every different device model from all vendors out there. Can we ever catch up with eHealth or NetVoyant? Should we even try? Where do we stop? Those are the questions on the mind of product team.
The current line of thinking is we should identify 20-30 devices in exact ranking order and aim to support them on day one. Ideally these will be most commonly occurring devices with customers we are targeting. We should also plan to sport user-friendly, wizard driven UI for our customers and professional services to add-support for additional devices.
