Tech Tip: NFA 9.3.3 Upgrade Path

May 19, 2015 04:46 PM

Please Always Refer to the latest Upgrade guide to ensure you are following the most current upgrade path.

https://docops.ca.com/display/NFA933/Upgrade+CA+Network+Flow+Analysis

  • CA Network Flow Analysis 9.3.3 supports upgrades from the following versions to the current configuration:
    • CA Network Flow Analysis 9.2.1, 9.3.0, 9.3.1, or 9.3.2
    • CA Performance Center 2.6/2.5 or CA NetQoS Performance Center 6.2 / 6.1.205 SP2
    • (Optional) CA Anomaly Detector 9.3.3

When you upgrade the software, you continue to use the same architecture:

    • Stand-alone to stand-alone
    • Distributed 2-tier to distributed 2-tier
    • Distributed 3-tier to distributed 3-tier

CA Network Flow Analysis 9.2.1, 9.3.0, 9.3.1, and 9.3.2 are the only software versions that you can upgrade directly to release 9.3.3. If you have an earlier version, upgrade to one of those before you proceed.

In order to upgrade to NFA 9.3.3 you must first be on Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 2012 R2.  If you are still on Windows 2003 you must first migrate to Windows 2008 R2 or 2012 R2before upgrading to NFA 9.3.3

  • If you are on NFA 9.0.161 we recommend upgrading from 9.0.161 to 9.1.4, to 9.2.1 and then to 9.3.3 follow the steps below:

1) Before starting any upgrade, regardless of what version you are running, you MUST make backups of all of your Databases on the RA Console, Harvester, and DSA following the steps on pages 50-51 of the 9.1.3 upgrade Guide.

2) Prepare your servers by installing Java 1.6u41 on all RA servers, and then run the consoletool-exe.jar on on the RA Console server.

3) Upgrade from 9.0.161 to 9.1.4 following the NFA 9.1.3 Upgrade Guide.

**Note that NFA 9.1.4 was a minor release so there was 9.1.4 Upgrade Guide published.**

4) Once the upgrade to NFA 9.1.4 completes, there is a period of time where your historical data will be migrated to the new database format. You need to wait for this historical data migration to complete on each of your DSA's before proceeding with the upgrade to 9.2.1

To verify that your Historical Data migration completed you can run the following command on your DSA's:

    mysql -P3308 -D nqrptr -t -e "select from_unixtime(value) from settings where name='migrationCompletedTime';"

If this query returns a current time stamp, it means the historical migration completed and you can upgrade to NFA 9.2.1.

5) After you verify step 4 and verify that you can see historical data, cleanup any left over tables on the DSA by following the steps in this KB on how to Cleanup old NQRPTR files to prevent future upgrade problems.

6) Then you MUST make a complete backup of your 9.1.4 databases following the steps on pages 52-53 of the 9.1.3 Upgrade Guide.

7) Then you can upgrade from 9.1.4 to 9.2.1 following the NFA 9.2.1 Upgrade Guide.

8) If you have NPC installed on the same server as NFA, you will need to migrate NPC to a new server before upgrading to NFA 9.3.3 using this document:Tech Tip: NFA 9.3 Upgrade Tip - How to Migrate Netqos Performance Center(NPC) to a New Server

9) Once this completes backup All databases as documented in the NFA 9.3.3 Guide.

10) Upgrading to NFA 9.3.3 will require an upgrade of MySql to version 5.6.  This may add additional time to your upgrade since all of your databases will be backed up while the upgrade runs.  This will also require additional free space during the upgrade to ensure there is enough room to backup your databases as noted in this document:  Tech Tip: NFA New Mysql version 5.6 pre-upgrade considerations

11) Then upgrade to NFA 9.3.3 following the 9.3.3 Upgrade Guide.

Thanks Chris

I was aware of the step to 9.2.1, I just wasn't 100% clear whether an upgrade to the OS was required.

Hello John, yes you can stay on Windows 2008 R2 and upgrade to 9.3.3, there is no need to migrate to 2012 servers after the upgrade.  Eventually 2008 support will be deprecated, but not yet.

Also being that you are on 9.2.0, you must first upgrade to 9.2.1 and then to 9.3.3.

Hi

I am planning an upgrade from 9.2.0.133 to 9.3.3 and have a question about the OS.

In the 9.3.3 documentation it states "A new installation of CA Network Flow Analysis 9.3.3 can only be done on Windows Server 2012 R2 systems. It cannot be done on Windows Server 2008 R2 systems. Upgrades from prior versions can still be done on Windows Server 2008 R2 systems."

The current system is running on 2008 so this implies I can upgrade to 9.3.3 using the current OS. The question I have is whether I can leave 2008 in place after the upgrade or do I need to upgrade the OS to 2012?

Can you let me know please?

Regards, John

It doesn't appear 9.3.3 supports a direct upgrade from the Old UIM Flow Collector server.  It was documented in 9.3.2 in the upgrade section, but not in 9.3.3.

So the upgrade path for someone running old UIM Flow Collector would be from Flow Collector to a full NFA 9.3.2 installation, then from their you can upgrade to NFA 9.3.3.

Note as with upgrading from 9.0.161 to 9.1.4, the ugprade from Flow Collector to 9.3.2 would require you to run the Console tool on the Flow Collector server and installing Java as noted below:

Verify that the Windows Servers Are Prepared - CA Network Flow Analysis - 9.3.2 - CA Technologies Documentation

Upgrading from UIM Flow Collector Server

Before upgrading to CA Network Flow Analysis 9.3.2 from UIM Flow Collector Server, you must do the following:

  • Install Java 7 (available from the directory where you pull the Harvester installer)
  • Run the consoletool-exe.jar (download from the same directory)

For customers upgrading their Nimsoft "Flow Collector Server" to the latest NFA release, I remember it was possible to go directly from Flow Collector Server -> 9.3.2. Does the same apply for 9.3.3?

Thanks,

Michael
