Creating a Interface Collection in PC from Spectrum

  • 1.  Creating a Interface Collection in PC from Spectrum

I am attempting to create a collection in CA PC to monitor only uplink and WAN interfaces.  I have a working GC in Spectrum that I want to use as my seed into PC so I am not monitoring hundreds of thousands of ports, only those that are critical.

I have a working Global Collection in Spectrum which lists all my uplinks, NetworkLinkType Equal To "Router Link" OR NetworkLinkType Equal To "Network Cloud Link" OR NetworkLinkType Equal To "Switch Link" OR NetworkLinkType Equal To "Wide Area Link"

I want to create a collection in PC to monitor all these interfaces only and not every switch port.  The Rule I created for the collection is for Interface and the only attribute is that Interface Item has to be a member of that Global Collection.  When I save and run the rules, I get nothing.  I have created similar collections for devices that work just fine, but for some reason the interfaces collection is not working.

    Thoughts?

    Hi John,

Are you creating the Group in CAPM under the Collections folder, or outside of that folder?

Collections can only have Device elements as members, for tying them to Certifications via Monitoring Profiles in the DA.

Groups are what you want to be sure you're using in this case for creating a group of common component elements like Interface elements.

I am creating it in CAPC under the Groups/Collections section.  I want to populate the collection with the list of elements in spectrum so I can monitor with the network interface monitoring profile.

Right, so you want to be sure you create a Group under the group folders to use for reporting purposes.

If you create a group under the Collection folder, it becomes a Collection type of group which is distinct from 'regular' groups.

Per the docs check out these pages:

I have tried that and I still end up with an empty group.  So to be clear, I want to monitor devices interfaces, like router, switch, firewall, etc, but not all of them.  So I have a working GC in Spectrum with all my interfaces.  I want to be able to create a collection in PC, so I can poll data from those devices and ports with the DC's.  Further, I want users to be able to right click on the port in Spectrum, launch PC and see the port details and utilization etc.

The terminology can make things confusing. We need to create a standard Group, not a Collection. There is a difference.

Can you send a screen shot of the Group tree from the Manage Groups page where you're creating this new group?

When you run the rule preview does it also show no items that match your rule, same as you're seeing for the membership of the group?

If we're getting into requests for sharing views that show proprietary or private details, or if the rules are broken, this may be best worked through a standard support case.

Here is the Group, the Rule and the Preview Results.

Thanks John. That helps with understanding this config. Everything is looking good there so far...

Is the Spectrum GC what is in the rule screen shot? Is the membership of Spectrum GC Interface_Monitors what we're basing the group membership on?

Assuming yes, if you go to the Groups->Inventory->Data Sources->Spectrum tree in the Manage Groups page, what does it show for membership?

Here is the GC in Spectrum:

Looks like the Interfaces are not displaying under the Group Inventory sections

it maybe the case that the IPDOMAINS are only Device level compatible and not interface.

I found this to be the case when I tried to do the same with Global Collections and eHealth , CA confirmed at the time inerface level was not possible..

Is that  the case Michael?  That Collections are only Device Level and we can't create an interface level Collections in CA PC?  If that is truly the case, the can we create a Monitor Profile in CA PC that limits the collection to interfaces where the NetworkLinkType is equal to Router, Switch, Wide Area and Network Cloud Links or is that value specific to Spectrum?  Aside from manually adding all the interfaces to a Group, is there a way to dynamically do this?

By the way, this was the expression in Spectrum for the Interface_Monitor GC:

NetworkLinkType Equal To "Router Link" OR NetworkLinkType Equal To "Network Cloud Link" OR NetworkLinkType Equal To "Switch Link" OR NetworkLinkType Equal To "Wide Area Link"
