Using Harvest R12.6, "Checkout for Browse" hangs for a large multi-level directory containing 1,881 files.  It is successful for a directory containing 1,330 files.  Using the command line, there is no problem with the checkout.  Is there an upper limit for the number of files that "Checkout for Browse" can handle?

There is not a set limit to the number of files that can be checked out at any one time.  Some things to check:

    - Depending on the platform you're checking out to there might be a limit to the length of the path and file name.  Check to be sure the path name is not too long.

    - How often does this happen? Does this happen with all projects or just some?  Do all users see the problem or just a few?  Does this happen every time or only during certain times of the day?  Check to see if there are environmental factors such as VPN, network slowness, high CPU load, or other activity on the server which might be slowing down the checkout.

    - Watch the output log while the checkout is progressing to better gauge the progress of the checkout.  If it does get stalled for a long period of time, does it stall on the same file name every time?

    - If you're seeing this with one type of client, like Workbench, try with a different type of client, like the Visual Studio plugin or the Eclipse plugin to see if the same problem happens there.

    - Check to see if regular maintenance is being performed on your database - particularly rebuilding the indexes and regenerating statistics.

The CA Harvest SCM Support team can help to resolve any problems you are seeing with your checkouts.  Please open a case and we can work with you on this.
