    Posted Nov 10, 2015 08:51 PM

    Hello All,

Whenever we do mouse over on any of the agent then we use to see Overview,Resources,Traces,Errors,Search,Metric Count,Location Map etc, some of the indicator showing red state under user and VM under overview tab and i assume these are heuristics.

1). I would like to understand the red alerts and who set the current value and typical value which caused it turned red?

2). Is it heuristics/default config from Wily ?

3). Would this affect our alert?s configuration matrix ?

4). It used to decide current and typical value of 'Number of Stalls','Average Response Time' etc on what basis and how it configured threshold.

Please help me to make me understand.

    Thanks

    Vaibhav

    Hi Vaibhav:

Can you provide a screen shot showing this?

    Thanks

I understand there is a case on this

    00240063

So answers should be sought that way

    Hello German,

I only raised that case '00240063' to CA support and they are still working on the same since a week or so.

    Please suggest.

    Thanks

    Vaibhav

    Hi Vaibhav:

FYI, I prefer Hal or Hallett which is my first name.

I see your case is undergoing internal consultation. I have made some suggestions and will track.

    Hello Hal,

I will wait for the information on this issue.

    Thanks

Is this already explained by support?

Heuristics - as the name says - "learn" the "normal" behavior of the application. These icons turn yellow and red if the current value deviates sufficiently from the expectation, see The Metric Browser Tab - CA Application Performance Management - 9.7 - CA Technologies Documentation

In APM 10 Heuristics have been replaced by Differential Analysis: Configure and Monitor Differential Analysis.

    Ciao,

    Guenter

    Hello Guenter,

    I have 2 questions:-

1). How we set current value and typical value? is this based on historical data and current data?

2). Is it heuristics/default config from Wily ? can we change these?

    Thanks

I was about to reply that it was a times series algorithm comparing current to past data and so you would not want to have to configure anything that would defeat the algorithm. Then I read Guenter's link about  HeuristicsandMetricBaselines and is a much better explanations.  Maybe what is missing in that doc is a qualification of what is the data based on which metrics?

I do not think we were able to set an alert based on the Heuristic metric although the overview tab was useful. I am now very excited and hopeful to use the new v10 Diff Analysis.

Update: when I say we were not able to set alert, I should have phrased that better. I meant that I do not think we spend enough time studying the values to make it an actionable alert. We like to set alerts across the board for all agents and all applications so that when an agent is added to the cluster it will trigger the same set of "standard" alerts.

    Hi,

you can't set any values directly. The baseline is generated from historical data and compared to the current value.

Baselines are generated for Frontends (User), Called Backends (i.e. Backends per Frontend) and VM (aggregate CPU). For Frontends and Backends Average Response Time, Errors and Stalls are evaluated.

The resulting state is shown as alert status (1 = ok, green; 2 = caution, yellow; 3 = danger, red; 0 = no data, grey) under the "Heuristics" node.  The heuristics will report as caution if the current value exceeds 2x the standard deviation and danger when it exceeds 4x standard deviation:

    Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 12.01.47 PM.png

If you want to alert on any of those you can just set an alert e.g. on "Heuristics\|Apps\|[^\|]+|User" to alert on the User status of each application. Set Caution>1 and Danger>2.

As Fred.K wrote this simpler mechanism has been replaced by the more sophisticated Differential Analysis in APM 10.

    Ciao,

    Guenter

    Hello Guenter,

    some questionf from clients are:-

1). Can't we change the baseline value on this threshold is decided?

2). If this is of no use for user then is there anything to disable these?

    Please suggest.

    Thanks

    hello Vaibhav

Please find the Document ID:  TEC604016

Understanding Heuristics baselines in Introscope and APM CE (CEM)

Hope , this should clarify your doubt.

    Thanks

    Hello Guenter/Olympia,

As far I understand this, We can not change the thershold value of this as well we can not remove this overview tab to avoid these heuristics alerts as this property is bundled with APM and not customized.

These heuristics would not affect any customize alerts. Please confirm so that I can confirm the same to client.

    Thanks
