  • 1.  Finish Date in Team - Staff page

    Posted Apr 24, 2018 02:36 AM

    Hi,

In the Team - Staff page, when we update the Finish Date for one resource then the Finish Date is being updated for all the other resources.

Is this an OOTB functionality? Can any one lead me to CA's documentation on this?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

    I could replicate similar behavior.

Please consider project which Project Start_Date=2018/04/01, Finish_Date=2018/04/30.
If you add resource as staff, Start_Date and Finish_Date of staff will be same as project automatically.
    So, Staff Start_Date=2018/04/01, Finish_Date=2018/04/30.
If you change Finish_Date of other staff to 2018/05/01, then Project Finish_Date will be changed to 2018/05/01 automatically. Because 2018/05/01 > project Finish_Date, so project Finish_Date will be changed to 2018/05/01.
At the result, Finish_Date=2018/04/30 of staff will also be changed to 2018/05/01.

I assume if you change Finish_Date of staff to less than project Finish_Date, Finish_Date of other staffs will not be changed.

    Regards,
    Shoichi

    Hi SaiKavya,

    Yes this is OOTB functionality.

Also, Projects dates will depends on tasks dates and tasks dates will depends on the Resource assignment , ETC.committed bookings etc.

    Regards,

If you go to this URL CA Technologies Documentation and enter PPM in the "Select a product" box you will see all available versions of CA PPM documentation.

The basic reason that all resource finish dates move when you edit one of them is that the default is to inherit the Project Finish date. By extending one resource's Finish date it updates the Project Finish date and, consequently, the Finish date of the other resources.

However, if any of the other resources have had their Finish date edited directly (therefore overriding the Project Finish default) then their Finish date will not be updated.

Hopefully, you will find a more detailed explanation in the online documentation.

In the 15.3 documentation, you might find this section useful...

This is an explanation of the date behaviour in PPM. Roles are used in this explanation but the principle applies also to Resources.

    Starting position

    Project Start 01/05/18 - Project Finish 31/05/18

All roles default to Project Start and Project Finish.

Open the Staff Properties for one of the roles and you will see the Project Start and Finish dates on the right-hand side of the page - the fields are called ‘Investment Start Date’ and ‘Investment Finish Date’ because this page is shared by Projects, Products, Applications, etc.

Now extend the Role Finish Date. Notice that the Investment Finish Date changes to match the Role Finish Date.

Return to the Team Staff page. Notice that the Finish dates for the other roles have also changed.

Now open the Staff Properties page for one of the other roles. Extend the Finish Date for this role and notice the Investment Finish Date also changes, just like before.

Return to the Team Staff page. Notice that the Finish date for the first role has not changed. This is because it was manually changed, therefore overriding the default behaviour of using the project (investment) Finish Date.

So, if you override the default behaviour by entering a date in the Start Date or Finish Date for the resource/role, then the dates are unaffected by changes to the project Start Date or Finish Date.

If the resource/role Start or Finish dates are extended outside the project dates then the project dates will be updated to match.

Hopefully, this explanation goes some way to clarifying this behaviour in PPM.
