Guidelines for Java Memory Tuning on Performance Center

I'd like guidance on tuning the memory for the JVMs that run on the Performance Center.  Users are reporting slow response times and the XMX on the three main processes are set to 6144m.  The server has 48G of RAM, so using 18G of 48 seems to be inappropriate.
