You can absolutely just backup the VMDK files as a means of keeping a "snapshot" of the system at a given point in time. However only do this after you have performed a clean shutdown of the system. And for the ultimate ability to restore, I would backup the entire VM directory, not just the VMDK files, so that you preserve the VM configuration as well.
It will add a little time to your upgrade process, but the end result is essentially the same as taking a snapshot.

In my understanding we have to take snapshots when ever I we need to upgrade the CA PAM tool to the new version for the VM boxes.
can we use VMDK instead of snapshots ? reason in our company they do not keep snapshots for longer duration but I can keep the backups for VMDK !!!
