  • 1.  U00003507 error when trying to use v12.0.4 ucybdbun with v12.1.1 AE

Today I mistakenly used the v12.0.4 AE DB Unload program ucybdbun to try to unload a transport case file from a v12.1.1 system. The operation failed:
    U00038002 DLL 'ucybdbun', version '12.0.4+build.492'. Start parameter: '-BTRANSPORT -D -C001 -X/tmp/UC0_AUTOMATED_TESTS-TEST1.txt -I/opt/uc4/utilities_v12/bin/ucybdbunEXP2.ini ', (changelist '1515074415').

Note that the folders RESOLVE_AGENT_GROUP and SQL_JOB_VIA_EXEC_VARA have nothing to do with the objects in the transport case. I do not know what those U00037137 messages mean.

I have seen U00003507 (and similar errors) before when using the wrong version of ucybdbun and ucybdbld, so this alerted me to the version mismatch. When I tried again using ucybdbun v12.1.1, the unload operation worked fine. I’m not sure if it’s relevant, but I noticed that the  the second U00003507 error message line was actually over 1700 characters in length. (Where the '...' appears, there were actually many blank spaces.)

I find it strange that ucybdbun:
    1. Tries to do something it cannot do, and
    2. Provides no clear indication that a version mismatch is the cause of the problem.

In a very similar (yet much more devious) turn of events, we, and Automic Support, invested several hours into debugging a strange Oracle error message.

Turned out this was related to me (shame on me) overlooking a certain combination of LD_LIBRARY_PATH load order, which led to a shared object from an Automic version being used foremost that was one minor(!) version older than the actual engine.

As I said, this kept several people busy for several hours with a very arcane error. Automic Support afterwards supported the idea that there should be some sort of versioning in the shared objects, which I strongly advocated.

It was ruled "works as designed" by product management IIRC, and at best can be requested as a new feature (which it won't, because nobody votes).

FOKUS: Versioning of the AE shared objects

    Best regards,
    Carsten

Carsten_Schmitz_7883: We’ve wasted hours on that too. About four years ago, I submitted a request asking that Automic update the programs so that they validate the versions of the loaded shared libraries. Automic declined this request.

Good catch FrankMuffke , didn't see that.

I referenced Michael's experiences and made a comment regarding the six weeks in "new" in the item. I shall post my next ideas with a "best before" date :)

    Carsten Schmitz

In addition to the Best Before Date I would schedule a daily reminder on your system - e.g. a send_mail to

everyone@automic.com" with "please check your Ideas &inbox#" - there are still good ideas left!

    cheers, Wolfgang

PS. for the scriptvariable &inbox# there could be another value...........
