hard drive failure on Linux

​Hi All,
We had a disk in an array on a physical server go out.  We had no way to know until someone saw the light on the front of the servers disk array. We know if there is an problem on a Windows system, this error condition will generate a critical error to the NT systems event log which we receive an NTEVL alarm to the IM console. But Linux systems don't have NTEVL probes installed. How are others with Linux severs able to monitor for this condition occurring?

This will really depend on the hardware you are using an how it can notify the OS there is a problem.
Many hardware disk controllers have a utility or method to write to the Syslog when there is a problem.
You could use logmon to monitor for these events.
