AM 9.3.2 and Oracle 19c?

    Hello,
Has anyone else upgraded to Oracle 19c and on Applications Manager 9.3.2?  I wanted to confirm the matrix is correct before we go ahead with the upgrade.  Thank you -
    Kellie

We upgraded to 19c while we were on 9.3.2 and had no issues with Application Manager.  They've released 9.4 and unlike other releases it's inclusive, so if you're going to upgrade you might want to consider upgrading to 9.4.

We just finished with the 9.4 upgrade and things are going well.  We did have to update the Client for everyone.  This isn't difficult but if you have a lot of users it could be time consuming.

Hi Laura.  Thanks for the heads up.  Do you know if the 9.4 client will connect to older 9.3 environments?  My thought is if we upgrade Dev to 9.4.1, then get all our clients updated, they will still have access to the upper environments (Test, QA, and Prod).

    Hi Kyle,

I guess I'm not quite sure what you mean by older 9.3 environments. Do you mean where the Oracle Database is earlier than 19C? We had already upgraded to 19C prior to installing 9.4 so I don't know for sure. I think you'd just need to look at the requirements for 9.4.1.
Let me know if that answers your question.

Currently we are running 9.3.0 and Oracle 12c database.  We are planning on upgrading to AM 9.4.1 and then database to 19c.  You mentioned that in your upgrade to 9.4 you had to update all the clients as well.  I am assuming you were referencing the AM clients?  I wasn't sure if during your upgrade if you had 9.4 AM clients that connected to AM 9.3.2 environments.

I guess we will test this in our Dev environment, and if the new AM client does not work with AM 9.3 environments, we will have to upgrade our clients along the way.

Thanks for the quick reply. :-)

    Hello,

With 9.4 there's a new RunClient.jar. The new RunClient.jar file will not work with older versions of Application Manager. The older RunClient.jar will not work with 9.4.
We update our Test environment to 9.4 first and for a couple of users in IT we had two versions of the RunClient.jar. One for 9.3.2 and one for 9.4.
When we upgraded our Production Environment to 9.4 we had to install the new RunClient.jar for all the users before they could access 9.4. They could not access Application Manager at all until that was done.
Fortunately we don't have too many users so this was manageable for us.

Ah, OK!  Yeah, that's what I was figuring.  I think we had similar issue with older versions of AM (now I am telling how long I've been doing this! HAHA!).

Thanks for this info, and we will have to plan accordingly.

So 9.4 is the only cumulative upgrade?  I am still at 9.2 and need to upgrade soon.  Is 9.4 my best option?

Considering this is the information I have received:

    Applications Manager 9.3

    March 31, 2022 - End of Maintenance

    March 31, 2023 - End of Support

    Applications Manager 9.4

    October 29, 2024 - End of Maintenance

    October 29, 2025 - End of Support

I would say 9.4.1 is your best option at this point, but you may be inclined to run unsupported.  To each their own with their environments.  Also, I would look at 9.4.1 instead of 9.4.0 since the 9.4.1 version has the hot fix to Log4j vulnerability from my understanding.

That's a good point. I submitted a ticket regarding this issue and Broadcom told me you need to following:

Please find 9.4.0 Hotfixes for Zero vulnerability issues as below:
    Applications Manager: AM v9.4.0.HF1
RA Banner: RA Banner 4.1.1 (If you have RA Banner)
The above Hotfix releases will replace the old jar with log4j 2.16.0.

I have a ticket in with them currently because the RA Banner agent won't start after I upgrade it to 4.1.1. Yeah, I had a ticket open with them as well on the vulnerability, and they sent me this link as a reference (looks like the same info they gave you):
    https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article?articleId=230316

The one line in the link which looks to be the line just after what you posted stated "Applications 9.4.1 replaces with log4j 2.1.7.".  I did ask them that the options are 9.4.0HF1 OR 9.4.1 for the vulnerability fix, and they said that is correct.

We don't use the RA Banner agent so not able to test that.

It's the only cumulative upgrade that I've seen them put out. You can ask them to confirm though.

Hi, Yes. We've been running on 19c for several months with no issues. We are still on 9.3.2 and we just patched our database to 19.13 (October PSU).
