APM Community Opportunity: Help Your Online Neighbor!

FYI: This is my first blog in some time because I am working on various knowledge document efforts. (Usually on weekends.) I hope to start posting again soon Blogs and Tech Tips.



The APM/ASM/AXA Community is very much alive with the many questions being posted, discussions held constantly, and original content/software provided often.


But, now is a good time to consider how we can do much better in developing a highly rewarding electronic neighborhood.


Our Opportunity: The Need to Interact and Help Out Each Other More.

Let's briefly review the Wikipedia definition


An online community is a virtual community whose members interact with each other primarily via the Internet. For many, online communities may feel like home, consisting of a "family of invisible friends."


And that definition shows our goal and opportunity. We all should work a little harder each day to build that welcome and relaxed atmosphere here, Where anyone new or an expert of APM, AXA or ASM can ask that important question or share their contribution whether finished or a work-in-progress.


How Do We Proceed Doing This?

Best of all, you the adminsistrator of these products can take a more active role in

- Sharing your experiences both out of the box and custom solutions with these products
- Get involved in responding to each other's questions. Mark a response to a post as correct as appropriate.

  APM Support holding off just a little bit longer before responding will provide more opportunity to do this.


I hope that many of you will get more involved in actively scanning future community posts. Then  responding and answering questions. Thank you in advance for helping yourself and others.


And the optional homework question
What else should we as individuals do to help our APM Community neighbors and Pay it Forward in helping fellow community members?


I hope that this starts a good discussion.

I'd be just happy with something like "CA APM Community breakout session" if it's impossible for the Community to split into individual product community, since many communities share Community Managers. Like Chris_Knowles mentioned, when I conducted APM Community get together during CA World, they were very productive and enabled us to spent a lot of 1:1 time w/ other members.


Can CA World '17 accommodate something like this?

To add one item to this list of collaboration ideas... don't forget that a lot of us go to CA World... the biggest CA collaborative event out there!  There are a lot of regional events that happen each night at CA World.  However, it would be nice to have community events separately out there as well.  So you could go to the APM Community dinner or happy hour gathering.  That way you know everyone in the room is working on the the same products and looking for the same kinds of interactions. 


We used to do this several years ago and it was EXTREMELY beneficial.  We all got to meet each other in person and those interactions translated very well into an active online community.  I believe these went away when they did away with the community board members, but I don't see why we couldn't add something like this to the event calendar. 


Additionally, there is one booth for the "CA Communities" in the middle of the exhibition floor that was nice for meeting the community managers.  Maybe they could have some "official" community gathering areas for each of the major communities... like maybe in the same area as the theater space for each discipline.  At least you could go hang out there in your spare time and know that you'd run into others from the community who you could chat and trade relevant solutions and stories with.


Ok... so that was two items for the list...    


Looking forward to seeing all you good folks at CA World this year!  Along with my friends in the IM community as well!

    A Jive Chat facility has been discussed internally. But nothing is happening in this area at this time. So #3 is a future item.

I think jive does have the capability of online/live IM with members who are online at the same time.

Good idea Manish. I agree on number one. Sometimes people has to interact 1:1 to share their experience/ideas based on their upgrade/installation approaches.

Thanks Hal. It's been a very long time I contributed on CA APM communities. I was planning to do it again and this post really induce me to contribute a lot more.

    Thanks for your thoughtful response.. Expect much more on this topic from me.  I passed your post on to Support and Community Management. My comments


The only thing holding back any action is just someone to run with it. Sowe just need volunteers. 


#1 Not sure if you mean CA staff, other customers or both. There is all sorts of online conferencing/IM software that this could be done depending on the parties. Support also is available though cases and chat. 

#2 Passed on to the Community Manager. I like this idea. Community members can  provide the presentation as well as CA staff. (Love to see a good mix!) 

#3 I kind of answered this in #1. Can also ask for a chat/IM feature to be added to Jive via the Water Cooler. Or somone steps up and becomes chat/IM coordinator and have running chats at certain times of the day

#4 I suggest opening an idea in the Water Cooler on this. What gets passed to the Community from the ticket could be a concern for some customers


Please keep the ideas coming. But ideas need to be enacted as well.

Good post Hal. Trying to wake up everyone looks like !!


as for the homework is concerned, here are some thoughts...

1 - Folk that are active on the community - can they be available to help out those community members who are more comfortable 1:1? (members be able to reach out to these active folks somehow if they are not comfortable posting something publicly?)

2 - A WebEx, (quarterly with the help of Community Manager) to present topics picked by community members via some kind of a poll followed by a Q&A

3 - Be able to IM other members of the community rather than posting a question and waiting?

4 - Somehow have CA Support Tickets integrated w/ the Community where if you open up a ticket as a customer, you are asked if you'd like to post this question on the Community in-parallel? This way not only the customer gets assistance from Support but at the same time it goes to the Community also (putting eggs in different baskets).
