Rally Office Hours September 22, 2022 Recap

As a follow-up from our September 22, Rally Office Hours session, we’d like to share some highlights in addition to the questions that were asked, along with their respective answers.

Thank you to all who joined us live. We appreciate your feedback and participation in the last session and are looking forward to our next one. If you were not able to attend, there is always an opportunity to ask questions here on the Rally Community discussion board and we'll do our best to answer.

Join us every Thursday, at 12 PM ET (register for upcoming sessions). We look forward to connecting with you!

September 22, Session Recap

Q: how can we move test cases from one container to another (multiple test cases)

A: The best way is to use Bulk Edit. You can do that by going to Plan -> Work Views, then filter for your test cases, then checking the checkboxes of those test case you'd like to edit, then in the new toolbar (on top) select 'Edit' and then set the Project field. This will result in moving your test-cases to another project.

Q: What is the recommendation for using the state field values of objectives "Done", "Archived" ? Thanks

A: OKRs is a brand new feature. It is in an Open Beta only for two weeks. It is too early for us to give feedback as to how it's used. However, one thing you can do is match the states of your Objectives to the states of the features at all levels. You may also consider naming your OKR states with names that are more meaningful of your OKR status rather than how it matches the portfolio status.

Q: I'm also wondering if there are Reports available to track Blocked stories  - grouping them by category and length of time, etc.

A: Using the Team Board charts is one option. You can include/exclude blocked time to these charts. Another option is to consider Plan -> Work Views. This page can help you filtering by a date range and even grouping by a number of fields, however, it only shows you fields of the work item, and "Blocked Date" isn't one of these fields.

Q: Is it possible to make a work rule for a custom field? If not, are there plans

A: Yes, it's possible. However, there is a known defect/bug that's being worked on by Engineering at this time. however, yes, you can select a custom field and as long as visible - then you shall see it.

Q: Can you give insight into how the URL field works? Why can i not put the whole link in there as is?

A: Rally's URLs which you see in your browser are formatted in a way that includes the ObjectID of the project that's selected, the scoping (up or down) that's selected, then the page name and then arguments that direct the page what action to take and what data to display. While you CAN study this a bit better and learn how to construct URLs, I'm not sure it's going to be too helpful. Keep in mind that since the URL holds the project oid, then if shared as-is, then users who have no access to that project will not be able to access your URL.

Q: Can you bulk copy test cases from one project to another project?

A: Unfortunately there isn't a way to Bulk Copy test cases. We have apps for portfolio items and stories, but not for test cases. We can still help with scripts that Broadcom has. You shall contact your Solution Engineer assigned to your account if in such a need.

Q: The Admin's page for Users changed recently. Does it really take 3 clicks to get to edit them now or is there any easier way?

A: It has changed as we updated the underlying technology for that page. We have gotten a lot of feedback on that and are in the process of making it easier as we update the detailed user pages. Please stay tuned and sorry for the inconvenience

Q: Can custom pages/dashboards be locked down so only specific users can edit the dashboard? Also, is there revision history on custom pages or apps.  For example the Rich Text app?

A: Unfortunately answer to both questions is 'No'. There isn't a way to lockdown custom pages so that they can't be edited. The only way to control them is to share them only with the projects they're supposed to. However, all editors and project admins in these projects will have the ability to change/modify the custom page. This certainly should be an enhancement request.

On your next question: Custom pages are not as all other work items who have revision history. Custom Pages are not part of our APIs and they're not work items. They don't have a revision history.

Q: how to create multiple build of execution? example if we have 3 builds in the project I have ran first build 3 test cases are failed I  would like to add failed test cases in the next build.  where I can create different build of test cases... when I was using Silk Central Test Manager Microfous tool there was a Execution folder I can create multiple folder under the project

A: There is a large discussion here and I would recommend you ask your Solution Engineering for time to discuss this. The "build" is created with each test-case-result. It sounds like what you're describing is a Regression Test approach where you need to run through cycles to guarantee no code regression. Rally is using Test Sets for that purpose. Test Sets allow you to include a few test cases, schedule them into a specific iteration or sprint, then you can run the entire collection of the test-set and record your results. You should be able to run your test-set again, as many times as you need.
