Rally Office Hours September 1, 2022 Recap

As a follow-up from our September, Rally Office Hours session, we’d like to share some highlights in addition to the questions that were asked, along with their respective answers.

Learning Corner: OKRs in open beta

Thank you to all who joined us live. We appreciate your feedback and participation in the last session and are looking forward to our next one. If you were not able to attend, there is always an opportunity to ask questions here on the Rally Community discussion board and we'll do our best to answer.

Join us every Thursday, at 12 PM ET (register for upcoming sessions). We look forward to connecting with you!

September 1, Session Recap

Q: How can I search the workspace for milestones?   They are not considered work items so it is difficult to search for specific milestones

A: You can use this Milestone Search app to find all milestones across the workspace.

Q: Is it possible to add a custom field that mimics “Tag” field. We should be able to add multiple values and it should let us auto complete if the value was already previously entered.

A: Unfortunately there isn't a way to replicate the Tags behavior to custom fields. Specifically, custom fields will not allow users to 'add a value', or fill-in item names based on initial typing in the search box, both of these are available for Tags. This request needs to be an enhancement request. You can find more details on that process here. A "partial" solution can be to used a custom field as a drop-down (either single-select or multi-select). It will not allow these two needs, but with admins help managing this field, you can get some help.

Q: Is there anyway we could setup WIP limit across states horizontally. We have couple of swim lanes and would like to restrict work across the states by those swim lanes in Kanban board.

A: Rally offers WIP for our states (columns). However, there isn't a way to create "an exception" or "an altenative WIP" per a given swim lane. That will need to be an enhancement request. See this doc to learn how to submit one should you choose to do so.

Q: Hello!  My question is about the "eye" icon for Notifications.  Are there any Rally roadmap items to allow the notification to be narrowed to specific changes?  Example...only notify me when a Planned End date is changed on a Portfolio Item.

A: The "Eye" icon is a watch. Any user can set up a watch to follow a specific work item (story, defect, feature ..) . However, you can use Notification Rules (click Settings under avatar) and create personal criteria that will send you notifications on certain items (defects, stories etc..) that meet certain conditions, such as: "When a story gets created" or "If a Defect in the Production Environment isn't 'fixed'" etc…

Q: when you say some configuration is needed for OKR - what do you mean?

A: OKRs are now in Open Beta. A Workspace Admin will need to set up a hierarchy for OKRs. To do that they will navigate to the Workspace's settings, select Fields, then choose Objective from the drop-down. Then they'll edit the 'Hierarchy Level' to create an objective hierarchy. They can there match each level to a portfolio hierarchy level that's used in their workspace. They can also edit the State field to customize the state values for each level, similar to how it is done for portfolio hierarchy.  In order to use (create, update..) OKRs a user must be an 'OKR Admin'. This is a check-box on the user object that must be enabled. Once enabled, then such users can use the Portfolio -> Objectives page and create a hierarchy of objectives.

Q: Is there an existing plugin/integration between Rally & Power BI? or has anyone implemented a custom integration to pull Rally data into Power BI for business reporting purposes?

A: Unfortunately there isn't an out-of-the-box integration for Rally and Power BI. This will need to be an enhancement request. Check out the process explained here to submit.

Q: I would like to know execution in Rally and realse  and build

A: Test Case Results will include a Build. In fact, it's a Required Field to enter a test-case-result. Normally you will combine your test-cases in a test-set for regression tests, then you can use the Test Run tab to enter the results for the test cases.

Q: the community app called cycle time chart -- is there any explanation for it ?  The readme  does not have anything

A: The Cycle Time Chart app is now available in our Rally App Catalog. The app shows the 50th, 75th and 99th percentiles of the cycle time of your objects. You can look at Features, User Stories or other work items (select in the app's Settings page). If you hover over the plotted dots in the generated chart, you shall get a tool tip with more info on the specific item.
