July 28, Session Recap
Q: Questions for Rally on custom field dropdown lists removing an item from the dropdown list - what happens to artifacts that have those items? Do we have to rename them all before deleting the name in the dropdown it will not allow you delete the item until old references are gone Can the lists be ordered?
A: Yes, you can rename and reorder the values in the list. However, deleting a value will require no references by any work items. This will include references by items in closed projects as well as recycle bin.
Q: can we see a single state compared to cumulative total?
A: This question relates to the tip we showed today regarding the cumulative diagrams. Yes, you can hover over any state and it'll show you the data of that state alone. The display will keep the total available which will allow you to visually compare the two, you can also compute the ratio manually but it is not available automatically.
Q: Is there a way to export the info on the discussions tab? When you add the field on the page it gives you a count that gets exported. Going into an actual work item, do not see a way to take this info out of Rally. Any suggestions?
A: Best is to use our Excel add-in. There is a more technical way which is to use our API page (available through Rally's help button) to find the info and export to a CSV, but that's a very technical way which is also not documented. Excel add-in should be your go-to solution.
Q: Will you add ability to (Group By Parent) on Work Views ? It currently exists as swimlames on the Kanban view. Surely the functionality is the same.
A: This is a RFE. Group By "parent" or "feature" fields are unavailable for user stories on the Work Views page.
Q: What is the best practices around CANCELLED work.. There isnt a workflow for this but what would you recommend?
A: Customer explained they use Jira/Rally adapter to connect and sync work and clarified that work gets cancelled in Jira after syncing up with Rally and asked how to handle. The best practice will be to create a custom field for each relevant object in Rally (stories, defects, features etc..) and use the connector to map this event and data. Customer understood and agreed, will look into this further.
Q: In the new timeline how is the order of the work items displayed.. We do not see a reflection of priority in the backlog example for sub items
A: The items are ordered first by Project, then by Rank.
Q: What is the best report to get this (feature cycle times) please?
A: Use Portfolio Kanban page, then switch to the Cycle Time dropdown option where you can build your cycle time queries against any portfolio level (initiatives, epics, features etc..).
