SEP client with error "Your Virus and Spyware definitions are missing or corrupted.."

    Hi all,

    On 1 occurence, this error was resolved just by restarting SEP services.
    Client version: 14.3 RU1 MP1
     
    one of the reasons for SEP clients to get the error "Your Virus and Spyware definitions are missing or corrupted. This computer will not be protected against viruses and spyware until new definitions are downloaded" is if new definitions have been downloaded but cannot be applied.
     
    Question:
    - What could be the exact reason for the client to get the error? How to check this?
    - What is the possible cause for new definition is downloaded but not applied?
    - Is there a way to avoid this from reoccurring?
