  • 1.  Question about DATACOM Server

    Posted Jul 25, 2022 01:06 PM
    Hello Community.
After some years away from the Cadre community I have returned, and I have a couple of queries that I would like you to help me with:
Does the Datacom Server need some type of license?
When implementing Datacon Server, is it necessary to make any changes to the Datacom/DB configuration on the mainframe?
I will appreciate any experience that is shared.
    Thanks in advance
    Best regards
    Fernando

    Fernando,

Welcome back to the Community!  You'll find a host of new features have been added to our products in your absence.  Be sure to make plans now to attend the Mainframe Technical Exchange this October.

Since 2017, when Broadcom announced Portfolio Simplification, all licensed customers of Datacom/DB Plus for z/OS are entitled to the use of all of these components:

    Datacom/DB
    Datacom Datadictionary
    Dataquery
    Datacom SQL
    Datacom Fast Restore
    Datacom CICS Services
    Datacom Server
    Datacom VSAM Transparency
    (and IPC, of course)

In addition, Ideal for Datacom customers also have available to them the Ideal for VSAM component.

To start using Datacom Server in your environment, if your environment does not have the code in place, download the Datacom Server 15.0 PAX and install it.  Then update the "DATACOM" MUF startup parameter to include DTCMSRVR, and you're on your way!  Reach out to the Community here or Broadcom Support if you need further assistance.

Let us know how the availability of Datacom Server in your environment will help you meet your business needs.

    Fernando,

Datacom Server is included in the Datacom/DB PLUS license.
All sites should have been moved to the Datacom/DB Plus license by now.

Datacom Server requires SQL to be enabled in the Datacom MUF. In addition
any data table accessed by Server must have their SQL attributes
turned-on. It is relatively a simple task to take a RAAT/SAAT only table
    and make it SQL-able.

There are multiple articles and videos on how to make a Datacom table
SQL-able, but if you need help just ask.

    All the best

    Kevin

Hi Kevin, nice to meet you.
I appreciate the information you have sent me, it is fundamental, and I have one question, the SQL option for Datacom/DB, does it have a cost and/or does it need a license?
    Best regards.
    Fernando

    Fernando,

Let me jump in and answer here.  Both Datacom SQL and Datacom Server are now included in the license for Datacom/DB for z/OS.  There is no additional license or charge for either component.

Let us know how we can help you get started!

    Hello Fernando,

I'm Nakesha Newbury, Product Manager for Datacom.  In addition to Datacom Server and SQL, we're working on other ways to modernize and enable access to data.  Please let us know if your site would be interested in leveraging REST APIs to access your business data or database system data.  REST APIs simplify the access of data for developers and enable building modern applications and integrations.

    Thank you for your questions.

    Fernando,

    Fernando,

Datacom SQL is included in the Datacom/DB PLUS license.
All sites should have been moved to the Datacom/DB Plus license by now.

To be more precise: The Datacom/DB Plus License includes all the core
    Datacom options including:

    - Database (DB)
    - Datadictionary (DD)
    - Dataquery (DQ)
    - SQL
    - Server
    - CICS Services (DBC)
    - VSAM Transparency (DBVT)

To use Datacom Server requires the SQL to be enabled in the Datacom
    environment.

In addition, any data table accessed by Server must have their SQL
    attributes
turned-on. It is relatively a simple task to take a RAAT/SAAT only table
    and make it SQL-able.

There are multiple articles and videos on how to make a Datacom table
SQL-able, but if you need help just ask.
