megaraid mirror rebuild best practice

i seek information about how to handle a mirror in which a drive is alerting to future failure, but in which the raid is still intact.

we are with a hosting provider which insists that we first remove the deficient drive, to replace it before rebuilding.
this seems to us to be a non-optimal, if not negligent approach.
the better practice would be to add a surface, incorporate it and then remove the deficient drive.

i have looked for descriptions, but find them for completely failed drives only.

does anyone have a pointer?
