I have a simple question. Is Java required on SEP 11 or SEP 12 Clients?

No, not on or for the client itself.

Only to use the remote SEPM console.

its only on where you have SEPM installed and when you try to access the sepm remote web console.

In relation to SEP/M, it's only needed for the SEPM remote console.

"Thumbs up" to the advice, above.

A couple extra notes.... the SEPM comes with its own built-in JRE.  There should be no need to manually install Java on the server.

Also: if you do have Java installed on any machine, please be aware of the recent vulnerabilities discovered in Java.  Also be aware that patches are now available for Java, and Symantec offers protection against threats which exploit the vuln.  It is a very good idea to upgrade that component and ensure that all SEP defs are up-to-date.

Additional comment to note above - SEPM 12.1 RU2 comes already with build-in JRE 7 (the exact version in SEPM 12.1.2015.2015 is 1.7.0._99). The SEPM version older than RU2 were supplied with JRE 6.
