HI

I am about to implement Storage IO control but before i do that I would like to get alarm if it activates. Vmware says that there is no alarm to tell you that it is active

What would be the way to identify that SIOC is active except for one person watching is 24 hours a day under datastore Storage IO control is there any other mechanisms that would allow me to monitor it

Hello @cer113a

It is good topic to discuss about SIOC. I have few things that can help you in some extent but you can review it.

There below articles which explain about this. There are few older article too.

If you have VMware Aria available in your environment then you can search for required metric & create your own requirement in Aria which gives such information if it is available. You can create your own dashboard with such visibility of VMs.

Short / easy logic would be tag a device / vm with some text which is unique with your requirement & then use that tag in your Aria dashboard or view the data using VMware PowerCLI.

Adding one more article if you already an alarm or alert triggered already then below article will help you trigger email notifications for such alert or alarm

Hello Again

I searched over internet & it is found that there is no mechanism which sends an alarm for SIOC (I may be wrong but I didn't find it).

For I/O latency, you can use datastore / storage latency (R/W) option or virtual machine storage latency (R/W) option in VMware Aria. It will help you to get visibility of I/O congestion alert in Aria.

Also keep in mind that some functions are deprecated and will be removed in future vSphere releases: https://blogs.vmware.com/cloud-foundation/2024/06/25/storage-drs-storage-io-control-deprecations/
