Hi Team,

I have a question regarding VMware HCX.

Is there any built-in feature within HCX that allows migration cutover to proceed only after receiving formal approval (for example, from management or a change approval board)?

We are looking for a way to introduce a checkpoint in the migration workflow, where cutover would require an explicit approval before execution, rather than being triggered immediately or manually without governance control.

Does HCX provide such an approval mechanism natively, or would this need to be handled externally.

Appreciate any insights or experience you can share.

No, it does not. You'd have to do this externally using API with automation. There's no inbuilt mechanism since migrations are driven by a user who have administrative access and not a CAB.

As an example. Set the migration switchover schedule to Week 4 in July. Once that approval has been met, say Week 2 in July, incorporate an automation system which calls on HCX API and tells it to ignore the maintenance window and cutover as soon as possible. Note, depending on the migration type that cutover is not immediate, there may be ongoing process which must finish before the cutover can start. This cutover behaviour is documented, and there are KB articles on it.
