  • 1.  Windows Server 2003 R2 as Guest

    When I create a new virtual server I have to choose Windows Server 2003 as the guest OS because R2 is not an option. After installing Windows I right-clicked on My Computer and went to Properties to confirm the version that was installed. It mentions nothing of R2 in there. I thought I may have used the wrong CD to install Windows so I tried it all again with the same result. I checked some physical servers we have running R2 and they do show R2 in the System Properties window. Does choosing the guest OS during the virtual machine setup affect how the OS detects itself? I can't think of any other reason that this would be happening.

    Windows 2003 R2 is shipped on 2 discs. 1st one is actually 2003 and R2 components are on second.

    After installation Windows will ask you to insert second disc to install R2 components.

    We have both discs but I don't remember being asked for the second disc when installing on the physical servers. Regardless, why would System Properties not show R2 on the virtual servers when it does on the physical servers. The same discs were used in both scenarios. Actually an ISO of the same disc was used for the virtual servers but I doubt that would make a difference.

    Either you just missed it or you have used Windows 2003 disc, not R2.

    The first CD is Windows 2003 Server.

    The second is R2.

    If during the installation you enter a Windows 2003 serial, only the first CD will be asked.

    If during the installation you enter a Windows 2003 R2 serial, also the second CD will be asked and the system become a R2.

    I think you got it. I bet I've been using a regular Windows 2003 key for these R2 installs and didn't catch it. I didn't think it would work if it wasn't the right key. I'll try one with the correct key and report back.

    today I have installed the Windows 2003 R2.

    Installation with CD1 will install windows 2003.Once complete the installation with CD1 ,you can login to the serverthen put the CD2 ,run the setup.exe inside the CD2.It will ask for Windows 2003 R2 CD Key and to confirm the additional components to be installed. Restart the server. that is it

    I have followed the above procedure it works.
