    Posted Jan 09, 2013 05:18 PM

    I have the following setup:

esxi 5 with a centos(Linux) VM and a OSless windows server VM provisioned.

    My hardware is the following:

    1 x AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX

    4 x GB of ram

    1 x 7500 rpm 500 GB  WD hard drive

synopsis everytime I install windows server 2008 r2 it is extremely slow, it takes down the whole server even the  Linux VM, even though I only allocated 2 core out of 4, and 2 GB out of 4 GB of Ram to the Windows VM. I let the install happen over night and it was only 66% done on expanding, nearly 8 hours!!

it rendered my server useless, no one can access my Linux server where my websites reside.

Question 1: what could be the cause of this?

Question 2: how can a VM restricted to only half the resources consume all of the resources?

I would guess the 1 x 7500 rpm 500 GB  WD hard drive might be responsible.

Question 2: how can a VM restricted to only half the resources consume all of the resources?

Half the memory and CPU, but not the disk IO. Are you using an ISO on this same disk to install Windows too?

Have you checked the Performance tab in the vSphere Client to see if anything looks consumed during the install?

I was suspecting the hard drive may contribute to this issue, I did not know I can allocate IO, I will look into this.

the image has been uploaded to the server, is this good or bad?

I did look at the CPU and memory usage but they don't look to bad peaked between 200-400 ghz. I will check IO

This is bad - the ISO is being read from the same disk that the OS is being installed on. If you have the optical installation media, give that a try. Disk IO is almost certainly the problem here.

Hmmm the server did not crash, but windows seem  to be stuck on expanding windows files, it stuck at 0%.

Same VM specs, but using a optical drive rather than uploaded ISO. Any suggestions?

    bad iso?

run a checksum on the disk or iso that you burned it from.

Thank you for being very helpful!

ill check, do you have a recommendation on a good checksum software?

also can I install windows server on my desktop and somehow load it into esxi(preloaded OS)

4Gb is way to little to run any workloads on, ESXi also needs memory for buffers etc.

You should get at least 8Gb to be able to run anything useful.
