  • 1.  When doing P2V partitions are converted to single VMDK

    Posted Jun 16, 2011 06:58 PM

    Hello All,

Say when I'm doing a p2v,  physical server with single disk divided into multiple partitions (C,D,E).  During P2V using VConverter 4.3, I don't get any option to break the multiple partitions to different vmdk files.  Every time it goes to single vmdk with multiple partitions, same as source.

I'm unable to extend the disk size using diskpart if there are multiple partitions on single VMDK, any alternatives??

Any help would be much appreciated !

    Thanks

    Hello.

Using the Advanced options of the disk settings in Converter 4.3, you can add new disks and place the partitions on them accordingly.

With the result you have, the best bet is to:

Add two disks to the VM (one for D: and one for E:)

    Take snapshot of VM

Stop the services and apps running in the VM

Assign the new drives drive letters and align them properly (if necessary)

xcopy the data from the D: drive to one of the new volumes

xcopy the data from the E: drive to the other new volume

re-assign drive letter to the the old D: drive

re-assign drive letter to the the old E: drive

    rename the new volumes accordingly

Reboot and make sure everything works

Remove the original D: and E: drives from the C: partition

Use extpart to extend the C: drive

    Good Luck!

You can convert individual drives although I haven't converted a multipartition drive in a while. It would mean running convert once for each drive.

I don't have access to a converter instance right now. If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to split the partitions into separate virtual disks when you edit "Data to copy" and there click "Advanced". You can even place the virtual disks on different datastores.

And you can use the Advanced tab to do the disk expansion for you.

    techguru,

To next p2v that you do, you can migrate each letter to each vmdk.

    C: - VMDK0

    D: - VMDK1

with this configuration you there more flexibility to manage, and security in case of crash Guest Os.

Follow picture how configure it in converter.

    hope help!
