Wake on LAN not work

  • 1.  Wake on LAN not work

    Hi

I'm using Intel NUC to host my ESX.

I can't make a WOL if it's turnoff by ESX. Led ethernet stiill green and orange and use more consumtion than excepted.

While turn off by press button or disconnect and reconnect powerplug, the WOL work again. And of course work using Windows OS.

So it's a driver issue regarding e1000 ethernet driver.

The issue still rest after 5 years. WHEN Vmware fix it ?

Just to clarify, when you say WOL doesn't work when "its turned off by ESXi", I assume you mean the ESXi host rather then an VM Guest . . . what is the actual state of the NUC ? . . .

       Sleep (S3)
       Hibernate (S4)
       Shutdown (S5)

In addition, when is the LED green and when is it Orange (refer NUC BIOS configuration for meaning).  By implication of what you describe, its not in the S5 state, as when the power is disconnected and reapplied "WOL works again", so one assumes that its in the S3 state.

Why not to change the driver from e1000 to vmxnet3 and to update vmware tools, and test it again

The problem is from ESX host and not VMs. It can apply on the host too ?

have you thought that Intel NUC with installed ESXi might not support WOL.

    so many dependencies there

    have you solved the issue?

No the issue still exist. A lot of persons have the same problem since 5 years ago. I've got my NUC since 2 years ago and the problem is the same too.

I think is a problem regarding the driver use by VMware because on Windows it work.

    Hi

Yes, when ESX host shutdown the NUC, I can't wake up via WOL.

But If I disconnect charger and connect again, the WOL work again.

I don't kown what's the state of NUC after poweroff. In misc setting, the poweroff is with ACPI mode.

In this state, the state of ethernet cable stay with orange and green blink. After power off manualy, it stay only with orange blink. SO I  assume that ESX not stop correctly the ethernet port, true ?

What is the NIC in the NUC?

Does the ESXi UI show that WOL is supported or not on the NIC?

    Hi

    The driver is ne1000

And in settings, yes WOL is supported.

When esx shutdown, the network interface stay at green/orange led.

This is indeed an odd one as there appears to be two conditions, one where the NUC is powered off then on from 'cold' and the other when ESXi (I assume this is what you are using) is powered down.

This would indicate that the BIOS is using different 'configurations' for each case.  Due to the lack of information on the Internet regards the workflow it not possible to determine what the differences are.  The Intel e1000 is supported, but with the cavate that 'both the chipset and the OEM implementation must support wake-on-LAN so that the NIC supports it'.  Also bearing in mind that ESXi is an enterprise system, so testing on PCs might not be a priority.

With this in mind you will have to, somehow, try and determine the differences between each of the two conditions.  Due to this lack of detailed information, one way would be to try an force an error under varied conditions.

    Requests:

    - Provide ESXi version (including patches)
    - NUC model and firmware version
    - Provide a screen capture of the 'Secondary Power Settings' i.e. WOL

    Suggest:

    - Run the following on the ESXi console

    list network adapters
       esxcli network nic list

check if network adapter supports WOL and is it is enabled
esxcli network nic get -n vmnic0 | grep Wakeon

    - Review the ESXi logs

    - Although somewhat counter-intuitive, have you tried with the ESXi wake-on-lan turned 'off' . . . and note the response.

    Hi

NUC model is NUC10i5FN with BIOS version FNCML357.0063.2023.1024.1117

How can I turned off wakeon lan on ESX host ?

I'm pretty sure at 90% that ESX host don't turn off correctly ethernet interface. Still continue to blink green and yellow. With others OS, green led still blink (significate attempt to receive magicpacket).

Seems to be relative to the driver. Do you have the possibility to review the code of the driver?

    Regards
