  • 1.  vSphere - Host Profiles - Validation Issue

    Posted Jul 08, 2022 05:32 AM

I am working on a prject to migrate ESX Hosts to a new vCenter 7 environment. As part of this migration we need to change the DNS parameters of the hosts including DNS server, DNS domain and DNS suffix search list.

I though I would use a host profile to apply this setting to the hosts after they were migrated.

From a host that had already been migrated and DNS configuration updated I exported to a new host profile.

The problem comes when I try to edit the profile to exclude all sections but the DNS configuration from the profile. When I try to save the host profile I get the message "Warning: New values caused validation errors. Original values have been preservered" and all of the sections have been enabled again.

I clicked on the "Edit with failed values" and the options with an error is for the distributed switch settings which is part of one of the sections I want to exclude.

Is there any way around this issue?

    Regards

Instead of disabling it you can also remove the entire profile from the host profile. This does however mean you would have to manually assign the uplinks and the dvSwitch. But looking at your story you are already doing this?

    Hi

    Thank you for the reply.

Currently I am removing sections of the profile by removing the tick from the section when I choose to edit the profile. Do I need to do this in a different way?

    Regards

If I understand correctly I think you are removing the tik which means it won't get applied but is still in the profile. You can also just completely remove profile settings by using the red X next to each section. Like the screenshot I put in below:

I hope this helps. Removing the entire section should remove it completely from the Host Profile, which might help you in this case.

    Thank you

That is exactly what I need and worked perfectly.

Now I just need to manually remove all of the individual items that I do not need.

Good to hear that worked for you! In the end you can try and figure out what is causing the issue at all. Because of course it normally shouldn't give you this issue at all.

I was able to remove the sections I did not need from the profile using the X as described.

I then tried the remediate option where it tells you what applying the profile will do.

It stated that it was going to make changes to a virtual switch. The section I left in the profile does not include any vswitch configuration.

At this point I gave up on this path and decided to just find a powercli script to do the job which I was able to do quite easily.
