  • 1.  vSphere Essential Plus to Standard Acceleration Kit upgrade

We are currently licensed for vSphere 4 Essential Plus and we want to grow beyond the 3 hosts limit.  Is it safe to assume we could just need to get Standard Acceleration Kit upgrade licenses for us to go beyond the 3 hosts limit?  Also, is it possible for us to get the vSphere 5 Standard Acceleration Kit and downgrade our license to vSphere 4?  vSphere 4 licenses are not available anymore.

If you are current on subscription you should have no issues upgrading to any of the Acceleration kits (see http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere_pricing.pdf page 9) According to http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/upgrade-center/licensing.html (see Version Downgrade) it's also possible to downgrade from version 5 to 4. However, I never did this with an Acceleration Kit, although I think this should not matter. I'd recommend you double check this with your VMware dealer or your VMware representative before placing the order.

We are current with our subscription and our VMware dealer is as confused, if not more, as we are about the licensing upgrade path.  To be fair, I was talking to our sales rep but he's going to bring in his VMware licensing person.  Never knew licensing could be this convoluted.
