Hosts with differing processors from the same family can added to the same cluster. It's only when you start wanting to use vMotion and DRS and all of the nice stuff that you need to worry about EVC (Enhanced vMotion Compatibility) which effectively sets a baseline for CPU features presented to the VMs by the ESX hosts, which evens out the playing field when there are a mix of CPUs in the cluster supporting different features.
