I'm running ESX4, vSphere 4, etc. While trying to eithe stage updates or remediate them, the host goes into maintenance mode, then almost immeidately comes back out of maintenance mode with the following error:

    Remediation failed for esx1.corp.acme.com: SingleHostRemediate: failed to download the patch binaries for vibs: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\hostupdate\vmw\vibs\glibc-2.5-34-.1994.vmw.i686.vibC:\Documents and Settings\All sers\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\hostupdate\vmw\vibs\glibc-2.5-3-4.1994.vmw.x86_64.vibC:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\hostupdate\vmw\vibs\glibc-comm-on-2.5-34.1994.vmw.x86_64.vib

I'm lost. All the proper ports seem to be open. There is more than enough space everywere, name resolution works, etc. etc.

    Any ideas?

Ran into almost the same exact issue. The problem is VMWare removed the UPdate 1 patch from their download sites used by UpdateManager, but your UpdateManager server still has it in its list of available patches. When you go to remediate, it attempts to download it, can't find it, and bombs.

To work around this, edit your patching baselines and exclude the Update 1 patch. I found I had to remove several non-critical patches dated 11/19/2009 as well (related to thsi update) to get remediation to work again.

To install the cum 1 patch now, you have to download it directly from VMWare's site and manually install on your ESX Hosts. Be sure to read the advisory on it too, since there is a nasty bug involved that may make your ESX host not recover after the installation.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the detailed response bsti. While starting to manually download the ESX updates I realized i hadn't updated vcenter yet to the newest update rev. I installed the vcenter update, tried the esx updates again and they went on without a hitch.

    Thanks!
