    Hello Team,

I would like to ask a question regarding vSAN Ready Node R750 and license. I was ask to create vSAN env and I was deliverded from sales department 2x ready node R750 and (only in order notofication) license for 2x vSphere Enterprise and license for vCenter Server. The problem is that I didnt recive license keys. I have two questions:

    1) Are license already installed on Ready Node Servers R750 or I should recive license key ?

    2) This server has 2x 480 Gb SSD SATA in Raid 1 for ESXi operating system. When I wanted to install version of ESXi I have choose it writers it need to be erased becase some data are there. Can I install ESXi iso there or I will lose license from point 1 ? I tried to boot from HDD drive but I get information no operating system installed, so what is there ? Should there be some ESXi installed already with pre-defined configuration ?

1 Ans: License is not installed on any of the Node. These R750 nodes are vSAN ready, means R750 nodes are certified hardware form factor for vSAN deployment.

2 Ans: During installation of ESXi,it will give us a massage that data will be erased if any. if these nodes are fresh/new nodes you can install the ESXI os on 2x480 GB SSD.

There will be no license installed,.

Just make sure you have VMware vCloud Suite license available. also you have only 2 node with you, then you have to deploy vSAN cluster with witness node.

Thank you very much for quick answer and thank you for documentation regarding witness.

Maybe you can answer my last question regarding wintess and also licensing. Becasue it will be new instanse of vCenter and vSAN. So i need to add another physical ESXi host where I will install wintess applianace owa. My question is does this ESXI regire additional licese or free Evalutaion Hypervisaor license ? I heard that after adding host with this kind of license will not work.

    Hi,

vSAN Witness Appliance is Virtual machine (downloadable .OVA format). This witness appliance need to deploy outside the cluster as per the best practice.

vSAN witness appliance is includes an embedded vSphere license, which does not need to be purchased separately.

Please refer below link for v SAN licensing guide.

    Hello,

thank you but thats no my point. I understand that wintess owa has his own license, but

witness owa need to stand on some ESXi whitch will be connected to vcenter (not those ESXi from vSAN cluster). My quesiton is does I need the licese for this ESXi where owa witness will stand. Or I can just use evaluation version of ESXi.

Thank you very much for helping me.

if that standalone ESXi host needs to be managed by vCenter Server than it needs a license. If you run it completely stand alone and manage it with the ESXi host client then it doesn't need a license and you could use free esxi,

    Hi

Yes, License is required for this ESXi where owa witness will reside/stand.

Evaluation license is for 60 days , after 60 days host will be disconnect from the VC. It better to have licensed  ESXi for such PROD Environment.

    Hello,

thank you for answer. And is it true what deeping is telling that I can use ESXi host with free version only for vSAN witness owa purpose ? I do not need to have it in vCenter (only witness will be connected but it has his own witness) ?

Described here as well that it can run on Free ESXi: https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-vSAN-Discussions/VSAN-Witness-options/td-p/1853556

Although I would prefer to manage the host in vCenter as well, I can imagine that this is cost prohibitive.

    Hi,

If you ordered Dell servers with licenses you should check Dell digital locker web portal. All keys should be there but you must take keys and register all in Customer connect web portal (There is guide in Dell Digital Locker). New servers hasn't implemented licenses so after power on you will have evaluation period for 60 days.

If you ordered servers with default ESXi image you can use it but If you prefer to clean everything and install ESXi from begining please remember that it is good to use dedicated ESXi ISO.

    Hello,

thank you all for answers. Problem was solved. Of course you were right. The license was not forward from our sales departmnet.

Also regading liceses we put witness on free ESXi host but probably to be easier manage we will buy some license too.
