    VMware vCenter Converter Standalone FAILED

    I am trying to convert a laptop running Windows XP to run under Fusion 3. The process gets close to 100%, then fails. The status shows:

    FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

    I searched this forum and it was suggested to modify c:\boot.ini.

    The original boot.ini showed:

    timeout=30

    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    I changed to to this and tried again, but got the same failure:

    timeout=30

    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    Any suggestions on how to get this laptop converted?

    I guess you use Converter 4.0.1 - for XP you'd better use 3.0.3

    your edit of the boot.ini only makes sense if you have a service-partition and did not include it during import.

    That change should be done AFTER running Converter.

    I was using 4.x. I just downgraded to 3.0.3 and will see if that works. Thanks.

    that is NO downgrade

    You need both versions: 4.0.1 is good for Linux and Vista - 3.0.3 is good for the rest
