VMWare Converter Installation Help

    Posting for customer Brian Steelman:

I have a question. I am trying to install the latest build of VMware Converter 3.0 Enterprise, but the install keeps failing. I have been unable to find any helpful information on this so far. Here are the details:

    1. Installing VMware Converter 3.0.1 Build 44840 on Windows 2003 Server R2 SP2, “Typical” install

    2. Install almost gets to the end, then “rolls back”.

    3. I get this final message - “The wizard was interrupted before VMware Converter could be completely installed. The system has not been modified. To install this program at later time, run the installation again.”

    4. This also happens when I do a “Custom” install and install the Converter Agent only, or install the Converter Manager only.

    5. I have been trying to install this on 2 different servers. Server1 is a virtual machine with no other applications installed on it. Server2 is a physical server that is running other apps as well. Both have the same OS mentioned above.

This is not a high priority, I was just starting to play with the software. Thanks.

Double check that you have sufficient privileges to install the program, and have the latest MSI. It could be that you have a domain policy restricting you...try installing as local administrator.

I have tried the install as a local Administrator and a Domain Admin, with the same results. I am using the VMware-converter-3.0.1-44840.exe installer.

Anyone have any thoughts at all? Has anyone tried to install VMware Converter 3.0.1 on Windows Server 2003 SP2 R2?

As stated above, please ensure that you are installing as the local "Administrator" account, and not a user with local admin privileges.

\- Are there any errors produced in the Windows System or Application logs?

\- Have you ever installed any other VMware products on these servers?

\- Was there a VMware / Converter directory created during the installation process?

I have mentioned above that this happens when I am installing as the local Administrator account and as a domain Admin.

The Application event log has an MsiInstaller message, event ID 11708, that says "Product: VMware Converter -- Installation operation failed."

No other VMware products have been installed on these servers.

The VMware/Converter directory gets created and files are copied to it, then the install fails and backs out, all the files get removed and the directory gets removed.

The only thing left over from the install is the "vstor2-p2v30" registry key in HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services.

\- Is "D:" a local drive or a mapped network share?

\- Are you installing using a locally stored installation file?

\- Will it install if you accept the default installation settings?

  • 9.  RE: VMWare Converter Installation Help

    D: is a local drive.

I am installing using a locally stored installation file.

\** The installation works properly when I install to the default directory (C:\Program Files). I hadn't tried this before now because I prefer to install applications on a different volume from the OS, but this is not a big deal. So Converter is installed and running for me, but I do wonder why it won't install to the D: drive. The local Administrators group has Full Control of the root of D:.

    Thanks for your help!

from my experiences, uninstall p2v, reinstall to C:\ drive.

if you cant, try using a remote machine.

I am also getting the same errors, but am unsure what you meant by uninstalling v2m. I'm not seeing it anywhere, and I removed the reg. key and it still isn't working. My vminst.log has the following entry for each failed install attempt:

    vieInstUtil: 08/07/07 16:33:31 Begin Logging

    vieInstUtil: 08/07/07 16:33:31 --- CA exec: VMCheckConverterInstall

    vieInstUtil: 08/07/07 16:33:31 End Logging

Any suggestions? I've had this work flawlessly on several other machines.

uninstall p2v (converter 3.0.1) - sorry for my shorthand

    1. uninstall (add/remove programs)

    2. reboot

    3. clean registry (may already be cleaned - see below)

Manual cleanup required of some Converter Agent files from remote source physical machine

    **********

In some cases, the automatic cleanup of Converter Agent files from the system on which it ran is incomplete. If there are vmware-ufad-p2v-XXXXX subdirectories remaining under %SystemRoot% on the remote source physical machine after completion of the import (either successful or failed), automatic cleanup was not totally successful, and might cause future import attempts to fail. To clean up manually (recommended), follow these steps:

    1. Launch regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

    2. Remove the stcp2v30 key

    3. Remove the vstor2-p2v30 key

    4. Remove all vmware-ufad-p2v-XXXXX keys

    5. Remove all courier-XXXXX keys

    6. Reboot

    7. Under %SystemRoot%\system32, remove all vmware-ufad-p2v-XXXXX subdirectories

Unforunately, There is nothing to uninstall. No reg. entries, nothing in Add/Remove Programs. Only a directory under Program Files (C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Converter) with openssl.exe and rui.cfg in it. What could possibly be causing this installation to fail with the same errors? I'm completely out of ideas.

redwood, i need more info on your physical machine ...

\- are you logged in as the "local" admin?

\- what is the version of windows?

\- is this a problem with installing converter 3.0.1 directly to the physical or to a remote machine?

\- was a previous version of converter/p2v installed? is there any other virtualization applications installed?

I think the problem is resolved... I was logged in as a domain administator account, and hadn't thought to try the local since I've never seen an issue like this before. The install worked fine this time. Thanks a ton for all the help, Anykey!

I also ran into this problem when attempting to install to:

    D:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Converter

On my Windows 2003 server, Administrators and System had full control to the D: drive. Since this was a fresh server build, the Program Files directory did not exist[/b].

Based on the log files created during install, the program fails when 'streaming' 2 files:

Attempting to stream rui.cfg from binary table to 'D:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Converter\rui.cfg'

Could not create directory D:\ (5).

    Failed to create file D:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Converter\rui.cfg. Code: 3

Attempting to stream openssl.exe from binary table to 'D:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Converter\openssl.exe'

Could not create directory D:\ (5).

    Failed to create file D:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Converter\openssl.exe. Code: 3

I found that creating the Program Files directory prior to install resolves this problem. It's not clear to me why this works, but it does. Apparently the stream-to-file operation behaves much differently than a standard file copy.

I am running the .exe from the desktop to the C:drive

    Thanks for any help

The Converter 3.0 do not support Windows Vista+

    Try latest standalone Converter 5.0
