  • 1.  VMRC - VM Direct Connection

    Posted Oct 10, 2023 01:45 PM

    Hi All,

I have a situation that some staff need to connect directly to a VM via Console.

I know VMWare use to have a standalone console software, I believe this was discontinued some time ago.

Are there any solutions to use VMRC or is there another way you are aware of?

    Hello,

Why deprecated? The "VMware remote console" product is actually available and maintained, you can easily download it starting from here: Https://customerconnect.vmware.com/en/downloads

And then based on your version of the ESXi product under the "Drivers & Tools" tab you will find the products and the available versions. You must have a profile at: https://customerconnect.vmware.com to download the VMRC installer (as written in the documentation).

    Hi,

Can't u use Remote desktop in windows to connect to the vm? If it is a windows vm.

Maybe you can create a new role and give that role, permissions to the vm. Add the user to the role.

Yeah, they can't use RDP as the application does not function correctly and we are trying to avoid giving the business access to the vCenter, even with limited roles giving only permission to the VM.

I know there use to be a tool to connect directly to a VM.

    Hello,

Of course there is another way, assuming you have adequate licenses (I have them so I didn't worry), on my Windows desktops (running on ESXi HOSTs) I have installed the "Horizon Agent" and the "Horizon Agent Direct-Connection Plug-In". Otherwise I'm afraid you will have to look for other tools to achieve the same result.

Once upon a time, in ESXi (supported or not) we could use the built-in VNC server (which worked quite well) to have direct access to the VMs, which was first deprecated and then removed (how and when who remembers).
