  • 1.  VMKernel Port Not Pinging

    Posted Nov 18, 2016 11:29 PM

I have lab 4 hosts all connected to the same switch with 4 VMKernel ports

    VLAN 10 -  Mgmt

    VLAN 9 - iSCSI

    VLAN 8 - VSAN

    VLAN 7- vMotion

All the hosts have dual port NICs all configured as trunks on the switch, all the hosts are part of a vDS.  3 hosts all work perfectly fine and all the VMKernel ports vmkping fine. But one of the ports on the 4th host will not vmkping back at all, in or out.

At the same time other hosts cannot vmkping the VMKernel port either, however within the 4th host it can ping the port itself so I know the port has been created just can't send traffic out of the host. But this is only an issue with the one port, all the other ports vmkping back fine.

I have wiped and rebuilt the host already, configured it the same exact way as all the other working hosts and the switch ports are all configured the same exact way.

Oh and creating the same VMKernel port on a vSwitch instead of in the vDS passes traffic perfectly fine.

I'm at a complete loss as to what could be causing this.

Hhmm. I'd check out the port on the dVS that is being assigned to the vmkernel adapter when you migrate it to dVS. It sounds like the port might be problematic or has port blocking configured etc.

Seems like your Ports are having some issues, I ssume no configuration error made as you already configured 3 hosts without an issue.

So as an update, the port is now working fine. BUT i have no idea what caused it nor what fixed it. It started working after I enabled VSAN for the cluster, I had a vmkping going while I was troubleshooting the issue. After getting fed up with the 4th host I decided to get the VSAN online with only 3 hosts. Right after the VSAN was configured I noticed that the vmkping had started responding.

    Consider me confused as hell.
