VM Upload Issues

Morning all,

Im trying to solve an issue that is preventing the rollout of a few virtualised firewalls.

Basically, for internet connected VMs (which connect to the internet via an internet VLAN), the download speed runs at the full 50Mbps of our connection. however the upload, either to FTP, speed tests or VPN, is under 1Mbps. Where as on a physical firewall we have, its runs at the full 50Mbps.

I initially thought it was a TMG issue, however after some more testing, our guest firewall, PFSense, has the same issue!

This happens on hosts that are both 4.1 & 5.0.

We have had the switching infrastructure checked over for both problems with the VLANs & any other issues of that type, however we cannot find any.

Which leads the common denominator to be the virtual hosts.

And i cannot for the life of me think what could be causing it.

Anyone got any ideas?

And there's no egress traffic shaping configured on the ESXi port group where these VMs are connected...?

If you mean the 'traffic shaping' tab on the vSwitches then no, nothing set.

Yep, that's what I meant..  The VM portgroup on the vSwitch also needs to be checked as settings here over rules those on the vSwitch. But Im sure you've already checked this..

Checked, the port groups dont do any overrides for us.

Any other ideas? As i really dont want to have to go back to hardware based firewalls. :smileysad:

Tried in a test enviroment changing vSwitch settings and the NICs used in the VMs, no difference.

This appears to happen on both our 4.1 & 5 boxes....strange.
