    we have a few 2016 servers that we are backing up using commvault and upon restoring I can't get them to boot up into the operating system. it stays in the state like the attached screen shot. 

    did not has this issue before. we are on esxi 7.0

    To me it looks like that either the restore process didn't properly restore the boot sector, settings like BIOS vs. EFI boot, or the nvram file.

    I don‘t know Commvault. If Commvault has a Instant Recovery Festure try it for this VM to verify it is able to boot. As  mentioned the boot records for the OS disk were not recovered correctly.

    Did you restore the hole vm or only a selected disk?
