  • 1.  VM Can't Ping But have internet connection using Custom Network Configuration

    Posted Jan 11, 2026 10:42 PM

    Hi Guys,

    I am able to access the site eg google.com using a browser in VM (Windows 11) but when ping google.com in cmd I am getting.
        Ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again.

    What configuration is needed for me. Basically I needed this to work on Custom Network Configuration. Kindly advise.

    Site Note

    this does not happen when I changed my network configuration to Share with my Mac
    this does not happen when I manually configure the DNS in the VM (Windows 11) Preferred DNS set to 8.8.8.8.

    My Windows 11 VM is configured to use custom network configuration (vmnet2)

    The overrides in the vmnet2 block are breaking DNS in your VM. The browser resolves names because it uses its own resolver stack. Ping fails because it relies on the OS for name resolution. You should remove the three option settings in the vmnet2 block.

    I have tried using your suggestion and it didn't work.

    I have replaced the vmnet2 section to the following.

    host vmnet2 {
    hardware ethernet 00:50:56:C0:00:02;
    fixed-address 10.168.145.1;
    }
    still the same issues...

    I just set up my VM yesterday. It took a while but I used Chat GPT to help me. Takes some doing to keep the AI focused but finally got through it. Wish I could tell you all that was done, but it took work both in Fusion AND windows.

    Can you share what you did to get things working - at least what you can remember. Might be helpful to others.

    I will have to go through a VERY long chat and extract what I can find.

    Currently I am fighting a horrific result from trying to install my TM3500 printer into windows. The crap freezes the whole machine no matter what I have tried to do.

    By "freeze the whole machine", does that mean that the VM is frozen but you can run other Mac applications, or does the entire Mac freeze (necessitating a reboot of the Mac)?

    Can you share more information about the printer you're trying to install - such as the manufacturer and the driver that you're trying to use.

    The VM freezes completely. I have to do a force quit to get back to the Mac operating system.

    Windows and the VM worked perfectly until I tried to install the drivers for my Epson TM3500. It was running 13.6.4 and Windows 22621.1.220506-1250.NI_RELEASE_CLIENTMULTI_A64FRE_EN-US.

    I may have done the driver install in the wrong order. Anyway, I tried updating to VM 25H2 to no avail.

    I am considering doing a fresh start since I don't know how to find all of the misc files that have been tossed here and there during the process.

    Hi Guys.

    I found the issues. Basically the Enable IPv6 is causing the issues. I have disabled that and now I can ping inside the VM.

    Vmware Fusion > Settings > Custom > vmnet2 > Enable IPv6

    probably you might want to forward this to the engineers for rectification. kinda weird when ipv6 enabled, the VM just can't ping but still have internet access.
