I am upgrading my vCenter Server from Version 5 Update 1b to version 5 Update 2.

I have 16 host in vcenter. Out of which 2 are in shutdown mode.

When update was running, vCenter Inventory service took long time to install. Is it because of that 2 host in shutdown mode.?

And is neccesary to stop all the vmware services before updating vCenter Server ?

NO you do not need to stop the VMware when upgrading - the upgrade process will shut them down when necessary. Installation of the inventory service as I recall does take a while but yes having two hosts could have added additoinal time -

    Thanks for your reply.

One more question: At the end my installation Showed "Installation Completed" But below it showed. Installation was interrupted and asked me to check logs that is vminst.log.

But when i logged into the vCenter Server using vSphere Client. And went to Help -> About Vmware vSphere. It is showing the latest correct build number.

I am not sure if the installation was completed successful ?

Did you check the log? I am sure what you will find is that there is a sarning saying that the vcenter agent was not updated on the two hosts that were down - you have successfully upgrade your vcenter -
