  • 1.  vCenter DB move and Server Move Question

    Posted Aug 17, 2010 06:48 PM

We have a VM'd vCenter on W2k3 32bit. We are going to go to vcenter 4.1 on a new 2008 R2 VM and move our DB to a new SQL server.

The KB article on the move servers says to migrate the DB using the vendors tools, our is SQL2005 32-bit to a SQL2005-64 bit machine.

    Server Move KB.

So I will stop the service and my DBA just wants to copy the files log and DB to the new server and see if that works. He says the migration may take to long. I don't know I'm not the DBA. :smileyhappy:

Has anyone done it this way with just coping the DB files over and then opening the new DSN over on the new server?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

The procedure detailed on the KB it's quite accurate, so you won't have any issues if you follow the steps carefully.

Check the Upgrade Guide of VMware Documentation, specifically the section 5 "Upgrade to vCenter Server on a Different Machine and Upgrade the Existing Database":

You also can try to move the Database and just update the DSN on the current vCenter Server to point at new Database Server. If this works, then you can continue with the rest of Upgrade process.

Using the Data Migration Tool to upgrade from vCenter Server 4.0 to vCenter Server 4.1 fails

I can't use the Migration tool since it only works with SQL Express and not on a remote server, which we are using. In the upgrade docs I was thinking it was a SQL Migration Tool and not something from VMWare.

Also I can't upgrade my current vCenter since it is a 32 bit OS. I have to go to a new machine with 64bit.

Yes your link is fine and it answered my question. The Detach and Attach option on page 36 is what I was looking for and can be done. The migration tool I think will be good for the setting of vcenter just not my DB move.

    Thanks that got it.
