vCenter Database connect after change hostname and ip

Hi,

I have question for you.. I have installed vCenter 4.1 with database seized on remote SQL 2008 server. I need install new vcenter on another computer which have different ip and hostname. I need stop actual vcenter service, disconnect database from actual vcenter and connect it to new installation of vcenter app on different machine.

Is it possible?

it will be working with change both (ip and hostname)? DRS cluster, Resource pools etc stay configured? or is it easier way remove all esx servers whicg are running virtual machines from vcenter and add it to new vcenter and configure drs and resource pools again?

pls give me your advice, it is production cluster not testing i want to be sure do it right way..

Hi

Well changing the name will kill your SQL server installation so if you can follow the idea of removing the hosts from the vCentre server and readding them and recreating all your app pools and clusters then I'd recommend that. I did a straight backup and restore when i had to change my vCentre server to windows 2008 x64 for 4.1 and it worked perfectly but i kept the exact same name and ip to allow this to be possible

Of course you can do that.  In fact, you can use the Upgrade Guide (despite you won't change the vCenter version) and to use the steps detailed on section 5 (Upgrade to vCenter Server on Different Machine and Upgrade the Existing Database).

I've made this change in some ocasions without any issue.

Just don't forget make a backup of vCenter database before you make any change.
