I am a little confused on terminology. I am using VMWare's Virtual Desktop Infrastruction. I know I should probably have figured this out but I'm still very new to all of this and haven't invested the appropriate amount of time. I currently have an ESX 3.5 U4 host. I also have a VMWare VirtualCenter v. 2.5 Build 147633 with VMWare Infrastructure Client v. 2.5 Build 147633. Lastly, I have VMWare View Administrator v. 3.0 Build 127642. What I need to know is do I need to "upgrade" to vCenter Server? Is it something completely different than Virtual Center? Any guidance would be appreciated.

VMware View is currently not compatible with vSphere4, so don't upgrade just yet.

Here are some of the new names, maybe it will be helpful

If VMWare View is the replacement for VDM Client and vCenter Server is the replacement for VirtualCenter. I wonder why vCenter Server isn't compatible with VMWare View? Also, is there some sort of replacement for the Virtual Infrastructure client within vCenter Server?

vCenter is compatible with VMware View, just not vSphere4 vCenter, as of today. With the release of vSphere, VMware released the core components, ESX(i), vCenter4 and the vSphere4 Client.

    Maybe this will help

So I would have to upgrade VMWare View to vSphere 4 client in order to upgrade the VirtualCenter to vCenter 4?

VMware View is the new product name for VDM, but since VMware View (VDM) is not compatible with vSphere4, you cannot upgrade right now. VMware View requires vCenter, and therefore the upgrade will have to wait until VMware View becomes supported on vSphere.

So - the current version of VirtualCenter that I have is sufficient until I upgrade everything to vSphere 4? Meaning vSphere Client 4, vCenter Server4 and ESX 4.

Thank you for all of the helpful links and replies. I do have platinum support so I am free to download and install at any time. I have a few machines going into production soon, so I think I'll wait until the dust settles.

Don't go with upgrade of vSphere 4 untill all the products will be supported on that. Stilll lot of products like View Manager (VDI/VDM), SRM, Lab Manager, Stage Manager etc are not supported with vShpere 4. Wait untill Vmware announce the next versions for them and start supporting on vShpere.
