In the process of testing vCenter 4, now that we've finally upgraded (from 3.5 U5 to 4.0 U1). One thing I was very interested in was expanded alarm/alert capabilities, specifically for host hardware.
As a test, I've simulated a couple problems on several ESXi 4 servers:
- drive failure (pulled a drive)
- power failure (disconnected one power supply)
A number of default Alarms exist at the root of vCenter, such as "Host storage status" and "Host hardware power status." They appear to be enabled, but when viewing the host (or Cluster, or Data Center) Alarms tab, there are no triggered alarms. However, when viewing the Hardware Status tab, the host reports the errors as I would expect.
Why aren't problems detected by the CIM components being rolled up to Alarms? What is the disconnect here?
Thanks for any pointers...
