  • 1.  vCenter Alarms not triggering

In the process of testing vCenter 4, now that we've finally upgraded (from 3.5 U5 to 4.0 U1). One thing I was very interested in was expanded alarm/alert capabilities, specifically for host hardware.

As a test, I've simulated a couple problems on several ESXi 4 servers:

    - drive failure (pulled a drive)

    - power failure (disconnected one power supply)

A number of default Alarms exist at the root of vCenter, such as "Host storage status" and "Host hardware power status." They appear to be enabled, but when viewing the host (or Cluster, or Data Center) Alarms tab, there are no triggered alarms. However, when viewing the Hardware Status tab, the host reports the errors as I would expect.

Why aren't problems detected by the CIM components being rolled up to Alarms? What is the disconnect here?

    Thanks for any pointers...

    J

Nobody cares to address this issue?? I see the same problem... I have a test lab with 4 VMs currently running the CPUbusy script that has the vCPU jacked at 100% utilization yet only 2 of the 4 VMs have actually triggered the CPU alert.. VM tools status on all VMs is reporting OK.. It has been well over 20 minutes now and they simply aren't triggering. I was really excited when I saw VMware finally added the triggers that made sense, the condition trigger which only triggers an alert after the condition has been present for 5 minutes or more, this is something I asked VMware for back in 2006 and they finally figured out they needed it... but regardless, what difference does it make if the triggering is now finnicky and doesn't work.. How about one of you vExperts chiming in.. or have you become exhausted with this forum??

Same problem here. When they do trigger I can't get them to clear.

Not sure if I should create a new discussion.

I am too experiencing alarms not triggering, specifically the "host storage status".

One of my servers (ESXi 4.1, HP DL360 G5 w/ HP management agents components loaded) recently had a drive failure, under the the "hardware status" tab I can see the warning for the Storage Sensor but the "host storage status" alarm is not triggered even though is enabled and the events to trigger alarms are configured correctly.

    Any ideas?
