I'd be interested in an anser for this too. Even if an email is not possible, can a file be produced that summarises which machines successfully backed up, and which didnt?

    Thanks

VCB is just a framework. I know third party backup software can send out a report via email, about the VM's backup status.

    Thanks

Right. VCB is just a framework.

You can also use a 3th part small programs that can send mail using command line, and add this line in your script.

I have used blat on Netbackup machines to send reports via email. http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/254809.htm You could probably create a script calling blat to send a message.

Careful. We don't want to learn from this.

You can also use the VIMA appliance to use the VCB framework for backing up your virtual machines. This VMware appliance is RHEL based so you can configure your own SMTP server in it or configure it to use a smart host (another SMTP server) to relay the mails. You will have to fire your backup scripts from this appliance connected in the same network.

The only problem here is that you will be adding a virtual machine to your infrastructure!

Thanks for the replies everyone, sorry it's taken me this long to read them ?:|

Sounds like scripting it using a 3rd party tool is the best option.
