  • 1.  using vmware-umds command switches

    Hi all,

can anyone tell me if it is possible to use the updates download service to obtain only ESX updates and ignore the mountain of other stuff that is retrived with the standard command "vmware-umds --download"?

does the -h switch, (enable ESX host update downloads), restrict the patches downloaded? if so, how is it used? i have tried and get an error message saysing a required paramter is missing. what is this parameter meant to be?

is there a complete explanation of the usage of this tool anywhere?

    cheers,

    jim

    Hi Jim,

Easiest way to do it is to modify the downloadConfig.xml file in %ProgramFiles%\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager (assuming you installed it to the default)

You'll want to set the following:

I also mod the patchStore node to specify a different store location, annoyingly this cannot be set with an install switch.

And yes, the documentation is rather scant but then again I guess it doesn't do much, from the looks you could almost install it via xcopy :smileyhappy:

    Cheers

thanks for that one, it did the trick and stopped all the unwanted downloads. Tidy.

I would still like to know how we are supposed to use the switches though, so if any one knows how they work that would be good.

    cheers,

    jim
