Used space increasing in datastore but not in Windows

Hi all,

My vms using disk as thin provisioning.

today i checked the size disk in datastore and see that the disk for C drive is increasing day by day. yesterday was 50GB but today is 75Gb

but i remote to Windows to check the used space yesterday and today are same. only 35Gb used.

the total space is same. only used space are diffirent.

anyone can tell me why ?

Have you taken any snapshots of the VM? Or it could be you are using software that makes use of snapshots even though you are not explicitly taking snapshots.

Check if there are snapshots in the datastore folder of the VM.

Hi,

this machine does not have any snapshot.

i found this link about relaiming free space Reclaim disk space from Thin Provisioned disks | Rickard Nobel

but im confuse about below:

1. why Think not issue like thin ?

2. i have 2 disk in this machine. only C drive has this issue. D drive not eventhough D drive for file sharing so i think it had to issue more than C drive ( for storing windows only)

The system drive C is the default location of the hidden system file pagefile.sys. You don't say what version of Windows you have with this problem. The default size of the pagefile.sys varies according to Windows version if you let Windows manage it. In some cases, it can be equal to the amount of RAM. For example, if you assign 8GiB RAM to the VM, it will create pagefile.sys of 8GiB in the system drive.

You can manually set the pagefile.sys to a fixed size so that it won't get created/destroyed everytime the Windows VM is booted up/shut down.
