I've done some digging around and I found some information indicating that ESXi 4.0 does not support USB devices. I just wanted to basically confirm this as I am trying to attached a USB Hard drive to my Virtual Windows 2003 Servers. This really is a bummer if this is true. Any idea's or workarounds would be greatly apprecitated.

Also if upgrading to Vsphere or another product aid in supporting a USB or DAS drive?

Thanks and have a great 4th of July :smileyblush:

USB passthrough is not a supported feature yet. You cannot mount a USB drive to a physical host and map it to a VM. You can mount it to another physical server and just share it through CIFS.

No one has said anything yet, but as you can see on VM hardware there are USB drivers, so it looks like this might be a new feature in another release or two of vSphere.

The best choice for attaching external storage is with a small network attached storage device that supports NFS and CIFS. There are very inexpensive single drive GB NFS / CIFS devices or enclosures. Many of them also support hot plugging USB.
